"Let's make them lick the south end of a northbound cow. But who knows -- these savages would probably like that."

At the very least, they may agree to it without being swift enough to work out the logistics in their heads...

What about the people who ALMOST buy something that needs refrigeration, and then just leave it on a shelf, or on the back of the checkout counter, where it sits ignored for the day.

Gotta wonder if the employees just slip it back into the refrigerated section, no matter how long it has sat out.

Unfortunately, I don't think you have to wonder about that at all.

I worked grocery in college. Some stockboys would open pickles, olives, really anything in a jar and take a bite and put it back on the shelf. I never even thought about doing it, gross.

The worst part is the notoriety this person has received. Now other idiots will be inspired to do it, whereas if it wasn’t so widespread, perhaps they wouldn’t.

What I'm saying is that I was a stockboy in 1974 and that stuff was going on then, and probably always has to some extent, because, humans and all. What is new is "social media", which in this case was anti-social media.

One aspect of tampering we overlooked .... I was just reading about the "pie scene" in American Pie, with the warm apple pie .... the teenager .... yielding to the urge .... in the kitchen ....

It took them six hours of filming it over and over on the set to get everything done right.

Just sayin... maybe teen boys should be banned from the pie section in the market. Oh .... and the doughnut section as well, cause you know ...

the byproduct of this is EVERYONE is going to be opening and closing every product they can before buying it. You can buy something that's been opened and closed multiple times even if it hasn't been tampered with.

My peeve is the cookie wrappers. You have a tapeline seal on the package and people open the tape seal grab a few cookies and seal it back up.
No harm done I guess but Im not worried about the cookies being gone. I'm more worried about what they dumped on the rest of the cookies while the package was open.
It must be a big thing because I've seen it quite a bit the past few years. I Never eat the cookies,I just turn them in for new ones next trip to the store.
When I worked at a store years ago you would be booted out in a heartbeat for something like this.

I think these tampering events are rare,

It’s this kind of offense that I feel would be well dealt with through the penalty of “judicial caning” (look it up on Wikipedia). Would never happen in this country, as we don’t have the stomach for it, but it fits the crime in my way of thinking. Would be a proper penalty for many juvenile offenses as well, IMO

Nah, caning costs too much, because you have to pay an employee to do it, and you send the perp on their way.

A better option is no jail time for these malfunctioning humans; if I were a judge, here's how I would sentence these types:

1. Eight hours of community service in a public park, performing dog doo pickup.

2. At the end of the shift, convict must lick the shovel clean.

This achieves two things: the idiot has eight hours to think about quitting time in a manner that most of us cannot even fathom, AND it helps keep public parks clean.

If I run for the position of municipal judge, I think a few of you may support me :o)
