Bass player here, thinking about guitar stuff. I’m interested in knowing how many use a clean boost vs just the guitar volume knob.

If your guitar full up doesn't have enough juice into the amp that you have, and the amp doesn't have enough drive of its own, and you need more, then a clean boost will/can come into use.
I think that's the reasoning as to why most people use one. That was the reason for the LPB-1.
Of course there are many mutations of this, but I think that's where it starts.

A good clean boost pedal will make a Fender Princeton Reverb sound like its volume is set to 6-7 when it’s actually set to 4. The pedal volume pot gives added volume control. With that said, the amp volume needs to be set high enough to realize the benefits of the effect.

Both, generally I’m using the vol knob to tweak ambient sound pressure, with my bass plugged into the EQ pedal. I’ve got it set to slightly increase the volume and tweaked for a lower bottom the tone control can’t achieve.

Volume ka-nob.
I used to use an RC Boost in my gigging days, but I like to keep things as simple as possible now.

I use a Keeley BD-2 set slightly about unity gain and an Ernie Ball Jr to adjust volume. Occasionally, depending on the guitar, I'll adjust the volume knob for texture.

A little of both. I have pedals that do clean boost, light bluesy overdrive, and more full-on overdrive but I'll sometimes use the volume knob to adjust texture and dynamics with each of those.

I'll add that the clean boost is always activated for my large and small pedal boards. A volume pedal is handy but not the total answer for me.

I'm in kind of a treble boost phase right now. it seems to make the cleans... well, cleaner.

Ask me how I know!?Jul 6th, 2019 11:46 AM Edit Profile
Depends on the situation and the song. I use my guitar's volume and tone knobs a lot, but don't always have my amp set for a nice sustaining overdrive, so sometimes a boost works better.

One of the things I love most about the Roland Blues Cube Artist are the tone boost functions you can activate for both clean and crunch...amazing effect on tonal texture as well as perceived volume.

willie, you got the GA-FC for all the functions?
I keep meaning to get one for my BCA, but I tend to use a full pedalboard so, I kind got everything there already.
Sorry for the side track...

If I'm playing and singing at the same time, I can't be turning up and down and making sure the "down" gets back to the place I started the song.
Clean boost all the way...

I do too but I’ve really gotten used to the floor tuner, not at home when I’m just putzing around, I have the old Sabine and the built in mic is great for ambient volume both electric and acoustic. At rehearsal and the odd gig now and then, I’m using the floor tuner, might as well hook up the bass DI while I’m at it. I use it on a couple tunes per set. I’m probably the only one that can hear it “o)

New guitars and old amps, baby!Jul 14th, 2019 09:22 PM Edit Profile
Both as well. I use a Morley JD-10 preamp going into a Vibrolux Reverb. I've figured out the settings so I can go from clean chords to a nice lead tone with lots of sustain just using the volume and tone controls on my Tele.

It depends on the style of music. For alt country, rockabilly and blues, I use the volume knob to go between rhythm and solos.
For hard rock, I use a clean boost for my solos.

Been playing for over 40 years, and I never thought I'd ever use a clean boost pedal. But over the past few years I've acquired a few of them (Xotic EP and Xotic RC Booster are my favorites).
I play in a Beatles Tribute band so I'm playing clean about 80% of the time. When it's time for a "George" solo, I gotta have something to step on to boost my volume but keep my tone clean.
