Also known as lacnafta in Sweden.

One of the issues is probably that you've applied several different oils on the wood; mixing different oils/conditioners can make them interact in a bad way--usually turning them into a gummy goopy mess.

Use naphtha/lighter fluid and an old soft toothbrush. Apply a few drops on the wood and gently brush with the grain, wiping up the fluid before it dries on the wood. Do each fret space one at a time, and rotate the cloth as you work so you're not rubbing stuff from the cloth back into the wood.

If you use a white cloth (old tee shirt, etc.), you can monitor your progress as you work because as the wood gets cleaner, the cloth gets less brown goop on it.

A.K.A. la nafta in Spanish. If your going to be working with it very long, resistant gloves are advisable. Also, work in a ventilated area. It is very flammable.

Thanks for the tips! I'll give it a try.

Just curious, is charcoal lighter fluid the same thing?

It's a lot cheaper to buy as naptha in the paint department.

I think some states have banned the sale of this tho, as it has been determined to cause California in the State of Cancer.

I like the Ronsonol bottle. It’s a great dispenser.

Denatured alcohol will work, but it's harmful to certain finishes and some plastics. It can also loosen glue joints.

Cleaning with naptha is a standard part of my setup procedure. Its one of the least dangerous or offensive solvents to use. Yes it is flammable but not dangerously so. You don't want to put naptha soaked rags in your garbage can. I buy it by the gallon and a gallon lasts me a year. I've yet to have an interaction with a musical instrument's finish but it would probably remove screen print from the faceplate of electronic devices. I like that it will evaporate fairly quickly from a rosewood fretboard and I recondition with a real lemon oil or Dunlop fretboard conditioner.

Man! A gallon a year! My bottle of lighter fluid is several years old. If I bought a gallon I’d have to put it in my will. 🤔😋

“...and I recondition with a real lemon oil...”

What? Don’t you like over-priced “lemon scented” mineral oil???

;^)

At wally world you have to ask for it at the cigarette counter. They don’t keep it out on a shelf.

Ronsonol has been used for many years on guitars.

This guy gets pretty good results.
