After a six month wait I received a beautiful 2019 Custom D-42 Martin and posted my satisfaction here in the FDP several months ago.

Then it happened...

I took a cruise down Highway 1 to Santa Cruz, CA and stopped by Sylvan Music (a GREAT store if you're in the area). I played a 1958 D-28 that was killer but at $10K was just too expensive.

Then I asked to play the 2017 '37 D-28A VTS Authentic sitting by itself in a glass case. One strum and it was all over!!!

Had to sell something fast to fund the purchase. The Custom D-42 was a very good guitar but could not compete sonically with that D-28A.

Luckily, I already had someone lusting after the D-42 and I sold it to him for exactly what I had in it. Then cash in hand for an agreed to price, I went back and bought the D-28A.

Next stop was Gryphon for installation of a K&K and I am one VERY happy camper!

The other note of significance is that I had sworn off all guitars with 1 3/4" at the nut. Welp, the neck fit my hand so well that I had no problems with the 1 3/4" nut whatsoever.

I'm rocking', dudes! If you haven't played one of these hide glue guitars, you owe it to yourself to do so. And bring your checkbook.

Congrats - and welcome back to the 1 3/4" camp! I really thought you had left permanently (I know you did, too!).

Amazing, 6. Luckily, there are no good guitar shops within a few hundred miles of here so I am never tempted to change what I have. I know the Authentics have lots of fans but I've never seen one much less played one.

Congrats 6. Its funny how those NGDs happen. It took me a while to warm up to the 1-3/4 nut as well . Now I dont even think about it.

Great outcome! Especially that you were able to sell the D-42 and break even.

Very cool story!

When you find that one magic guitar, it’s like all the planets have lined up for you.

IIRC you sold your D-18A because of the 1 3/4" nut width. Hopefully this one works for you.

I much prefer the looks of the D-28A over the D-42. Martin's 40 series just never appealed to me, looks wise.

Enjoy that D-28A.

You recall correctly, Viera. I loved my 2011 '37 D-18A, but the nut didn't work for me with that big neck. Sold it on with tears in my eyes...

It's the neck shape on my D-28 that lets the 1 3/4" nut work fine for me.

As for 40's series Martins, I love 'em. Love the look of bling on the 41, 42, and 45's.

Have to say that the appearance of the Madagascar rosewood used on the D-28A's leaves a lot to be desired. But I can put that aside for the incredible TONE they generate!

"6, Did you try any new moderns...?"

Nice guitars jv, but they do not rumble in my chest like an Authentic.

Also, I'm not a fan of the neck shape on the moderns or the re-imagined series.

Did you go for the relic version of the Authentic, or was yours a newbie? I saw both versions available at My Favorite Guitars.

6, after all these years of playing, do you really notice the neck shapes all that much? I don't. I mean, I'm aware of the difference between my HD28V and D42 necks but I don't notice it while playing. I doubt I'd notice the difference with nuts either (except when it comes to classical guitars). Just like different pianos/keyboards, you play whatever's at the gig.

Chris: Yep, my hands are very finicky when it comes to neck shapes and nut width.

Stratcowboy: Mine is not a relic'd version, but it does have VTS. While it's a 2017, it was new when I bought it so I am the original owner.

The one neck shape that doesn't work well for me is the sharp V, like on an EC Martin... I can't handle that hard center when my thumb is anchored back there (which it isn't all the time, but enough for it to literally be a pain).

Congrats on the new new guitar.

PS we have differing opinions of Sylvan.. personal experience in 1989.. never again.. not for any reason. Never.
