I pulled them out of one of my tele's and tried some custom wound vintage tele pups...the vintage ones sounded great...no complaints....but after at least a year..(and some boredom)..I put them back in just for something different.

after a quick set up and adjustment I forgot how amazing they really are...

yeah I know they can be a bit hard on the ears...but backing off the treble down to about 7 or 8 puts that to bed....

if you have a few tele's in your stable, I think at least one of them should have Bardens.....

Years back the band I was in had Detroit guitarist Billy Farris sit in with us for several gigs. He played a Tele through an old blackface Deluxe and I recall talking to him about his Barden pickups. I think he had the usual initial reaction (too hifi, etc.) then tuned them in and settled into their thang and found the sound. Great player and man his sound was 100% badass.

I love the sound of Bardens. Bill Kirchen got some of my favorite Tele tones ever in that old coal burner of his. Such sweet detailed sounds if you dial them in right. Any pickup can hurt your ears if you don't twerk it. Errrrr tweak?

I think being away from them so long made me appreciate how good they really are...

probably the most fussy pick ups I've ever dealt with..(other than a set of original wide range humbuckers I have on one of my tele's)...

but once you dial them in and back off the tone control, they really sing...

and I love Gattons' tone in this song...one of my favorites...

"Newer or older version?"

actually the bridge pup is before Joe closed up shop...a good friend of mine in Va. used to wind pickups for him...there is the smallest crack in the pup..very hard to see so I'm guessing Joe didn't want it out there so my buddy kept it

When the company re opened again I bought the neck and when I wired them up they were out of phase... so I'm guessing my buddy also wired the pup backwards....anyway once I realized that I changed the neck pup wiring and that fixed it....

but both pickups look identical in appearance...i.e., as in same materials used....

I have no idea why Joe decided to close up shop...I'm sure my friend told me why but I can't remember...I don't think he's involved in the new business at all other than naming.....I'm sure someone else here knows....

Bardens/JBE are fantastic pickups and my personal favorite. I have a Tele and a Strat loaded with them. Yes they are fussy to get right but the main thing for me was progressing to be a good enough player to enjoy them. My first experience with them fifteen years ago was a shock. I thought to myself, I've got to get a whole lot better to play through them. Granted, I didn't spend much time dialing them in but it wouldn't have mattered. Now, I just plain dig them and both guitars with JBEs are always on the practice floor.

"I've got to get a whole lot better to play through them"

man isn't that the truth...but today was a good day... I was able to dime my amp..Tele with Bardens straight into a 1960 Gibson Vanguard...

it was glorious!

after I was done I turned out the lights and held up a match....;-0
