I haven’t been around amp work for a while and am out of touch. What’s the popular filter cap these days? Used to be Sprague and I checked the other day and noticed they were pricier than other choices. Worth extra money?

What’s your choice and why?

I use Sprague and Mallory.

From what I can tell, these are now made in China, but they're still pretty reliable.

Paying extra for caps with gold leads and racing stripes is a waste of money. Remember Leo Fender's philosophy: buy the cheapest parts that will reliably get the job done.

For electrolytic caps I tend to use F&T caps most of the time now. Sprague and Mallory was the industry standard for many years but F&T has begun to take a lion's share of sales due to better pricing and physical size considerations. Sprague and Mallory are made by Vishay.

For Fender cathode caps, I still prefer Sprague 25uF 50 VDC or 25 VDC.
