What should a matched pair cost? Looking for decent quality and a reasonable price.

Would like to upgrade my SV20C Marshall tubes sometime soon.

I've looked and they ALL seem to be a bit on the spencive side.

They are expensive.

Generally about $18-30 per tube for current production, and more for NOS stuff.

While I'm asking is there any brand name of EL34 tubes that is preferred by Marshall owners here?

I like the Mullard reissues or the EH 6CA7. Both can be found for less than $50 a matched pair, I think.

I don’t know that there are any to stay away from, really.

Leftee-I was reading another forum and of course there are different opinions on the same tubes. I don't want to chase that rabbit LOL!

If it were me I’d run the stock output tubes until it was truly time to change them.

You’ll *possibly* get a more noticeable difference trying different 12AX7s in V1. Maybe.

I’ve done the “tube rolling” thing (what the kids call it these days) a lot in the past. The biggest lesson I learned is, don’t bother. If the tubes are operating correctly, the differences are minimal or not noticeable.

Again, *sometimes* that first preamp tube can make an audible difference. For instance, I tend to not like the JJ ECC83 in V1. They often seem dark and a bit lifeless. I’m largely talking British-style amps - not Fenders. In the rest of the sockets they’re fine and I’ll leave those alone if they’re installed.

YMMV

Over the years, I've had excellent results from a number of new issue brands of EL34...including JJ, Mullard Reissues, and Tung Sols.

Cost for recent mfg tubes is generally from about $30 to $50 +/- for a matched pair. NOS 6CA7 (EL-34) pairs can cost hundreds. I sold a few pairs of 6CA7 on eBay when I retired and began reducing my parts inventory.

Amplified Parts has a 10% off sale running this weekend on your entire order. I think they’re cutoff for free shipping is $89. If you have other stuff you need, this is a great time to order.

I'm sure everyone knows that Amplified parts and Antique Electronic Supply are the same retail company...as is CE Distribution though it is for wholesale business only. Weird...

It's interesting that AES and AP both run banners here.
