. . . the bass player shows up to our ONLY practice on Saturday without having gone over the songs. We'd not played together for about a year (although I did do a gig with the drummer).

He said he no longer had a CD player to practice to our two CD albums. But ALL of our songs can be listened to on our website and can be streamed on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.

We're playing a festival this coming Saturday. At least me and the drummer are ready.

Argh!

That had to be frustrating!!! It's really hard to put up with other musicians that don't put forth the effort required to do the job properly. IMO if you really care about being good, you'll do whatever it takes, whether it's finding the time to practice, or sometimes just listening to the songs you'll be playing to ensure that you remember where the breaks are, etc. Or in this case, going to a website.
It all requires time, but I can't believe it when people tell me "I didn't have the time" to make sure I would know my parts. Stay up a little later, get up a little early, don't tell me you don't have the time. All it really says is that you don't care enough.

If this band ever actually got back together, it would be with a different bass player.

This guy is a good friend of mine, but his actions (or inactions) baffle me and are a main reason why currently I'm playing in another band.

Hand him a White Stripes CD. Tell him to learn the bass parts for all those tunes.

Perhaps he'll get the message.

I now know what is causing his issues. After finding out, I was just happy to play with him and our great drummer today.

God bless him, I know he was having mental issues, but this is a lot more serious that I thought. It was a good day with a friend with problems, but doing the best he could.
