I wanted to come up with some distinctive pickup covers for one of my recent builds, so I modified a humbucker metal cover, and a P-90 metal cover so that I could add amp grill cloth material as show through inserts.

Truth is I needed something to pass the time waiting for tonight's Game of Thrones finale!!

Thank you both!

Peegoo, I remember seeing a post from wrnchbndr some years back with pics of one of his tweed cloth guitars. I was blown away by it, and it was one of the things that inspired me to try this. I am still in awe of how in the world he got the cloth to fit to the curves of the guitar so perfectly, in fact if I am remembering correctly, the guitar that I saw the pics of was a Tele that was covered completely in tweed- no binding on the sides- seamed tweed. It was fantastic.

You end up with a backwards Fender 3-D tattoo on your forearm. I know...I played this one at a Joizy Jam :o)

The grill cloth would be an excellent choice for a patterned foil replacement. Sometimes ebay has very interesting pickup covers. Nice.

The strat has a 1/8" wide groove around the perimeter. The tolex and the grill cloth are forced into the groove and with the aid of CA, a 16 gauge wire is forced deep into the groove like a screen door rubber spline. There is also contact adhesive on the large face surfaces. The strat was brimming with mojo and a great guitar. I did three telecasters in either tolex or tweed but cheated by implementing front and rear 3/32" plywood caps that I covered in fabric prior to gluing the caps in place. None of the telecasters had mojo. Despite being geometrically correct with decent necks, they were black holes of tone and resigned to being wall art. Probably due to the bodies being douglas fir :)

Thank you!

I really liked the way that the the amp grill cloth looked for the pickup covers, so I decided to modify the sound hole covers to see how they would look.
