Hey Roly.... Does your work ever take you to the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival in Haines? I'm trying to get a sense of the size of the event for a small article on northern music fests. Any idea of the attendance? How does it compare in scale to Dawson? Pretty substantial line-up, judging by the website.

TIA!

Go ask in the Performer's Corner...that's where Roly hangs out.

Hi Cooper

KMBF is one of the few annual events I am not affiliated with.
Can't offer any details regarding the number of tickets sold.
Here's what I do know.
The main stage venue sounded abysmal for years.
Since then, the room has been treated and is now one of my favorite rooms to do shows in.

The festival is preceded by a week long "music camp" where members of the performing acts including local players are instructors.
My wife has been both a performer and an instructor for the events.
I do not know how many venues are running for KMBF.
DCMF typically has five venues.
I was the #2 tech for the mainstage for about six years.
Given the number of venues, I suspect but can't confirm that DCMF sells more tickets than KMBf.

An event that you don't seem to be aware of is the Atlin Arts And Music Festival.
It's in northern BC just south of the Yukon/BC border.
I'm the mainstage monitor tech. 48 channels and eight mixes, more if necessary.
Although not as well known, I believe it rivals DCMF in all aspects.
I have done monitors for David Grisman, David linley, Bruce Coburn, Gord Downy, Ian Tyson and many others.
Please don't omit AAMF from your article and KMBF is in Canada in Haines Junction, not Haines Alaska.

cheers
Roly

PS...I'll post a picture of the view from my hotel room in Atlin

Thanks, Roly! Very helpful and much appreciated. FYI. I do know the Atlin fest, but I'm drawing a hard (arguably unfair) line at the 60th parallel this time around. Also know my Haines'. I'm an NWT guy, but I do have a bit of time on the ground in Yukon.

Meantime, once again, many thanks for the assist. Very helpful!

Hi Cooper

Guess there's no need to inform you about "Folk On The Rocks"...:>)

With one exception, I have teched all the "End Of The Road" festivals in Inuvik, and have also teched "The Great Northern Arts Festival" up there too.
Are those events on your list?
cheers

Hey Roly.... GNAF and the others will get name-checked, but this is a by-the-numbers type piece for a small biz mag. Only one page. We’re going to zero in on the big three music-focused fests: Folk on the Rocks, Alianait in Iqaluit and Dawson (ergo my question about whether Kluane Bluegrass drew more people, being closer to Whitehorse.) We’re looking at things like revenue, expenses, value of in-kind donations and volunteer contribution.
