It's no longer a simple game when you're so into it that it rules your life.

I was a member of a local club in the mid-2000s and there were several players

like this guy.

I just got back from our club house where I whipped my wife but good in ping pong.

The last time I played, I won and my opponent needed knee surgery afterwards.

Alcohol was involved.

These champions obviously spent their early teen years smacking their balls around, while I, locked away alone in my bedroom, was busy unfolding and studying the works of Professor Hugh Hefner. Pretty much every day.

I don't know...I'm thinking these guys might be better off spending 22 hours per day in their bedrooms copping Malmsteen licks like their peers.

It's no different from football and basketball here in the US: kids in school have dreams of being famous and making money as a pro. In reality, only one in about 3,400 high school players gets drafted by a pro team.

So yeah...playing a guitar is probably a better plan.

There's such a fine line between the unemployed computer gamer, living in his mom's basement, peeing in a jug to avoid game pausing ....

and the geeks competing for millions in prize money, in front of avid fans, who buy tickets to watch them fiddle with their mice.

Be all you can be

My brother took the sports track, I played music. He graduated from collage with a football scholarship, I didn’t. He still loves sports and plays basketball and golf, his three sons all played, two graduated with football scholarships.

The two that had the scholarships now teach, the first one made the cover of sports illustrated as one of the ten smartest football players in collage sports.

I still play every day, I’m way past the rock star dream but in retrospect I’m glad I never made it. My friends that made their living playing are worn out, those that are still doing it have few options. I couldn’t be happier than were I am today. I have rehearsal this evening with my friends and look forward to it.

I haven’t put myself out there in years. I never auditioned for a group an not gotten the gig, except one in 9th grade, the band was looking for strong vocals. I’m not interested in a working band at this point in my life.

My brother still plays his 12 string and keeps a drum set in his home office “o)
