So my fishing buddy and I are heading up into the Blue Ridge on Thursday to fly fish on the Rapidan River. We have been using Tenkara rods, but I got these ultra small / ultralight rods and reels from Pen. Check 'em out they are super small!

The rods telescope to a little more than 5 feet. I loaded the spool with some 20 lb backing, 5 wt fly line, and 4 lb monofilament! The brook trout high up in the mountains are usually small so I don't think we'll be breaking the rods on huge lunkers :)

Sweet! I had a little mini rod and reel many years ago that I used on Bream so I know how much fun it will be.

Last year we hiked down to camp Hoover and got a few brook trout at the headwaters of the Rapidan. This year we are hiking in from the bottom. We always enjoy this even if we don’t catch a thing! A bad day hiking and fishing beats working!

cool, looks like a great portable rod to put in the backpack. I have a few days off while the wife is working next and was thinking about going up to Tellico (probably best trout fishing in TN) hiking/camping for a few days but would have to take the dogs along and not sure how they'd do quietly sitting on the river bank..

Flyon,
I don’t know your dogs but I have seen many guys out mid- stream fishing with their dog watching quietly from the bank.

The two of us are in our late 60's, so our biggest challenge on the river is threading the eyes on the flys! Can't hardly see the damn things!! We have to use magnifying devices 'cause getting older su*ks!

I find the sound of rushing water to be extremely soothing. It really does soothe the soul :)

I’ve never fly fished. But nice weather and a fishing pole is never a bad way to spend some time.

Been years for me, though.

That's wild, I'd not seen these before.

I've been looking at Tenkara rods based on your posts -- I think I'm sold in that direction. I've been messing around with tying some Tenkara style flies -- they are a lot simpler and easier to tie in 16 and 18 for my geezer eyes.

Good luck with the new rig.

Bet you're having a good time up there if you stayed over.

Leaving tomorrow for Tellico. Wife is working nights and I can't stand leaving the dogs alone for 13 hrs while I live it up so will take them up there.

Going to hike tomorrow, do some primitive camping then fish early Sat AM. The mini dachshund will do fine but will have my work cut out keeping the beagle calm.

Wick and I had a great time yesterday fishing! I drove from Warrenton and Wick drove from Richmond to Graves Mill, VA. We went fairly high up on the mountain along the Staunton River. On the way back down we also fished a section of the Rapidan. We caught 3 brook trout, Wick caught 2 and I caught 1. One was about 9" or so which is decent size up in the mountains. These two rivers are catch and release only. We left the waders in the car and fished from the edges.

Almost stepped on a copperhead snake!

Had a nice conversation with some riders on horseback along the Rapidan.

Weather was perfect, we used a bunch of bug spray though!

I included a link to a video by the Virginia Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries about the top 5 Virginia Trout Stocking Myths.

Oh, I almost forgot, the little fly rods worked great, but I'm going to make a couple tweaks to my setup for the next outing.

With these rigs you are only casting maybe 8 feet of fly line, which doesn't weight much. So we decided to add strike indicators to our lines, just to get a little extra weight out there near the end.

The Rapidan was running pretty high and fast so we had better luck up on the mountain along the Staunton.
