I want to replace the electronics and pups on my 2009 SG standard (Batwing). I have a set of Antiquity in one of my vintage LP's that I really like and I am tempted to just buy a set of those but I thought I would ask what else there is without spending to much.

I am looking for Angus tone, I think he actually uses an old stock set (Yes I know tone is in the fingers, cept my fingers are sissy fingers). This SG has a circuit board and a set of 490's in it and no there is nothing really wrong with it.....

I really dig this SG and will prolly put a vintage style wanker bar on it too.

I’ve got a Faded SG with the 490s. The volume pots were 300k. I changed mine to 500k and got a hotter, brighter output. It’s a bit of a hassle with the PCB, but it wasn’t a terribly tough thing to do.

I’m not sure if your model has 300k or 500k.

You could also remove the PCB and install 4 pots in the traditional way.

Either way I would try different volume pots before different pickups (if you find they’re currently 300k).

Gibson says the vols are 300 and the tones are 500. I am thinking about the Emerson kit with the Bumble bees (just for the more vintage look) I can skip the pups for now :)

Thank you, Leftee! Always a pleasure.

Once I changed the volume pots in mine I really dug the pickups.

YIKES that is expensive.

The components are perhaps $40 total. Those PIO caps dry out over time...and beyond nostalgia reasons, a 10-cent poly or ceramic cap is more rugged and lasts longer.

I gotta give a tip of my propeller beanie to the tech that soldered up that circuit in the pic tho. Looks like good work.

$40 bucks is about what I have into it. The thing is my patience and skill at doing this kind of clean work ain't ever gonna happen, period.

So it behooves me and my old eyes to "let it be".

So there! I have to admit that those caps are probably "craps" but the BB look is pretty cool. I saw an ad a while back by I think "Luxe" or someone where they cracked the aftermarket BB PIO cap open and there was a chicket or something inside... I wonder.

Anyway, I will just cut the connectors off of the pup wires (The stock pup wires are the braided style which is nice, like those allot also because of how the appearance is). I can do the minimal soldering needed without making a mess hopefully.

I really like this SG, the 50's style neck is a beast like I have never felt before, it is wide and the FEB with those 6 story high frets really get me off for some reason, and at somewhere around 6 lbs..... it is love.

"they cracked the aftermarket BB PIO cap open and there was a chiclet or something inside...I wonder."

The Emerson BB caps are true PIO's. Lollar and a few other high-end pickup makers offer them as an option with their pickups and circuit sets.

But like you say, there are plenty of fake PIO's, including the BBs Gibson installs in their guitars. They're modern poly caps in an overmolded package, painted to resemble the originals.

I actually thought of that, but knowing he lives in western Pennsylvania, the commute to China every day would be a reg'ler bee-yatch.

It sounds great and I am glad I did it, no pickups needed.
