Hi. So I'm listening to Rival Sons, and get the idea to get a fuzz or nearly so. So who uses a Proco Rat and what is cool about it?

I have an old 'big box' 80s RAT as well as a modern Keeley modified 3-way RAT. Both are excellent if vintage, gritty, nasty distortion is your color of choice. RAT people will tell you: Avoid the newer Chinese models for they are made of inferior parts -and- look for RATs sporting the LM308 chip. This will give you the true vintage RAT effect.

I have a Turbo Rat from the 80s. NOTHING does the Rat thing like a Rat does.

If you own an older one, pop it open and look inside. Chances are pretty good you'll find a personal message on a little label. Some are very funny.

The rat sound is really fantastic. I had a CMATMODS black plague that was great.

I never dug the RAT sound. The tone/filter control only had one single position that I could live, and everything else I hated. But I had an old one with the supposedly magical brand of opamp that was farted by a golden unicorn that sold its soul to the devil on a crossroads so at least I got a nice price for when I dusted it off and found it a new home.

My mileage varied. Yours? Suck it and see.

Thanx guys. I'll probably get the cheapest model. I see LM308 opamps are available for a couple of bucks, I'll try that out too.

The op-amp thing is a bunch of BS perpetuated by people on the Web that have no idea about how they work. Same thing applies to the Tube Screamer.

Do not waste your money!

Yes. It's a load of hooey.

There is no difference in sound due to an op amp. Any difference in sound between two pedals is due to variations in pot and component values.

I have one from the 80's and got the Keeley modification. I know very little about electronics, so don't ask me what was changed. It now has a switch that goes from classic to ballsy to wide open bypassing something or other. The ballsier setting is so amazing. I could never quite bond with the RAT before, but now, I'll be buried with it.

I ♥ the Keeley mod. Here's the description of the upgrades & specifically what the 3 way switch does to your tone.

Yeah, the op-op voodoo is cork-sniffery.

I do dabble in mods to circuits that have those dual op-amp gain stages. I’ll stack another like op-amp in parallel on top the original. It makes the distortion a bit richer, reduces the loose floor and makes the circuit a tad more touch sensative. I’ve got a Boss SD-1 and a Marshall JCM800 SS combo set up like this.

Are we talking about two of the same opamp circuits but just changing brands? Or changing what the op amp does?

I know op amp types make a big difference in microphone preamps and line level sections of a channel strip, like a Hardy 990c vs an API 2520. Whats the deal with pedals? I didn't know that existed.

Changing the model will make a difference. I.E. the vaunted JRC4558 is noisy.

Changing brands/manufacturer? IMO that’s cork-snifferery.

I shouldn't let this cat out of the bag, but what the heck.

I bought an Akai Drive 3 Distortion as a Stupid Deal of the Day a few years ago for $25.

Fell in love with it. I can get that liquid Shawn Lane thing with the tone down around 8 o'clock.

Why do I mention this ?

Because that box is a Rat clone, as is the Biyang Mouse.

TIP: you may find a 56k in place of the Rat's 560 ohm resistor.

Change that, and its Rat all the way.

Now don't tell anyone else, I don't want to see the prices of these things skyrocket !

That Akai box sounds interesting, I'll watch for a cheap used one. Or the Flatiron fuzz which gets good reviews.
