FDP Forum / Guitar Mods, Repairs, and Projects / adding dpdt switch for in series combinations of 2 single coile pickup guitar

I have a (2) single coil pickup guitar that uses a Les Paul style 3 way toggle for pickup selection. I would like to add a dpdt switch that would allow me to put the pickups in series regardless of the position of the main 3 way selector switch, so that I could use it as a lead boost etc, and then switch it off and return to whatever the 3 way selector position is. I have not been able find a wiring diagram online for this single coil with a Les Paul toggle configuration, that would give me this in series override selection when only one of the pickups is selected, and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

That's doable, but it takes a 3PDT ON-ON 3-pole switch rather than a DPDT. Not as common as a DPDT, but still readily available. Of course, you could also use a 4PDT ON-ON and just leave one of the poles unused. Schematic at link. If you decide to proceed and need a wiring diagram, come back.

Thanks so much Te 52!! If you would provide a wiring diagram, that would be a huge help.

To go further, one would need to know what you have in mind for volume and tone control or controls. Single master volume and single tone control would be the simplest.

===========

Note that according to the text on Peegoo's link, the series position puts the pickups out of phase, which Tinkerer did not mention as something he was seeking.

Thanks to you both- what I am looking for is to keep the pickups in phase, and to be able to flip the additional switch to put them in series, regardless of whether or not the 3 way master toggle switch is positioned in the middle. I'm going to go with single volume control, and no tone control.

Thanks again!

This ought to work for you (link). To reduce visual clutter, I haven't shown all the grounds interconnected, but I'm sure you know how to do that.

You say you're using a Les Paul switch (Switchcraft, etc.).

Another option is a four-way Tele switch. The differences are:

- You'll need to convert from a Gibson Switchcraft style to a Fender CRL/Oak style

- It will negate the need for an additional 4PDT switch

The four-way switch will yield

Position 1: bridge pickup only
Position 2: bridge and neck pickups in parallel
Position 3: neck pickup only
Position 4: bridge and neck pickups in series

I had a 4p dpdt mini toggle in my parts bin- wired it up according to TE52's diagram, and it is just what I wanted controls wise.

Thank you!!!!!!!!
