There needs to be a balance of powers so to speak, in ones musical life.

Rick is unmatched in cutting to the core of music concepts, theory and practice. He has his own book, "The Beato Book".

However, as I have been warned before by others, mostly my teacher Rick(not Beato) who himself had a storied career as the USAF Airmen of Note guitarist from the late 60s to the late 80s, "don't be a bookworm"

At the end of the day, it's about playing music.
His own teacher, Dell Staton (a monster player who would accompany himself on solo gigs with a set of organ pedals) looked at the "new" book Rick brought to his lesson once. It was a copy of Jimmy Casales and Jerry Cokers now classic "Patterns for Jazz". He remarked that it was "neat" but to make sure and forget about it when you go out to work.

Myself, I used to be a player that just wanted to play, and was very weak on theory. Over the years, I think I've gotten too caught up in the theory side of things. I've realized that while I can tell you that the 3rd diatonic chord of Ab harmonic minor is a Cb Major #5 chord and play it in a few drop voicing inversions, I can't play many tunes.

All of that theory stuff is "peripheral" according to Rick.

How much time do I spend practicing playing tunes? A minority. It should be the majority, actually.

With that, I would like to introduce you to the great Jimmy Bruno.

He was Buddy Rich's guitar player at age 19 in the 70s. He is a no nonsense, make-a-sailor blush with his mouth jazz legend.

Jimmy serves as my youtube balance for the theorists out there. I love the theory, especially since I am perpetually injured and can't practice much these days.

But, Jimmy helps reign me back in.

Every morning almost, in the wee hours, he posts a video. It has none of the production value of a Beato vid.

It's a webcam, Jimmy with his messed up hair and a lit cigarette between his pinky and ring fingers, and a guitar(usually).

Balance is important, and I think these basic ideas that he shows are good to reign me back into just making music.

There is a lot of cursing and unrelated ranting, so be warned.

I'm a huge Bruno fan. He tells it like it is.

His latest Guitar Player Mistakes vid is fantastic!

In fairness to Beato, he does a lot of stuff outside of pure theory. The majority of vids of his I've watched have applied what he's talking about to music, sometimes without any mention of the theory behind it.

That said, I look forward to checking out this Bruno guy!

Oh, sure. I didn't mean it to sound like he *only* talks about *pure* theory. He certainly applies it to music. However what he talks about in many of his videos is in quite a contrast to what Bruno does.

There are several 10-15 minute videos dedicated to whiteboard topics of slash chords, drop voicings and their permutations and more. There is a 17 minute video dedicated to the diminished scale. All very theory centric. Applied to music? Sure, but that doesn't mean it isn't theory for the majority of the topic.

And, there isn't anything wrong with that. It has it's place of course.

All simply pointed out to show the contrast in types of thinking. Beato does plenty of non-theory vids, for sure. Bruno is a very different take on it, though.

The guy is no-nonsense. When the downbeat happens, no one cares if you know the note names, what you are thinking etc. Can you play or not? That is his point much of time, I think.

Yeah, his comment about players showing up at guitar shows to "get discovered" is hilarious.

His point (hilariously made as always) is if you're a player, you are out playing in front of people--and that is how you get discovered. Not as some vendor-adorned wankfest.

He's a grumpy old man because he's seen it all and done it all. He's probably had more crap gigs (having to deal with morons) than he cares to remember.

I think he's earned the right to tell us kids to get our damn bikes off his grass :^)

I'm actually not totally sure which guy we are talking about now.

I *think* 5Strats comments are about Rick Beato, and I *think* Peegoo is talking about Jimmy Bruno.

As usual, I don't know whats going on. What day is it again? No, like day of the week. Of course I don't know the date.
