I played a rockabilly (i.e., Gospelbilly) show today and on the 1st song (based on the video someone sent me), my vocals had an unpleasant goat like quality. And I (the goat) was pitchy for most of the 1st song too.

NOTE - I'd not sang these songs live (or any songs) for about a year and just went over them a few times the day before (it's a 3-piece thing with me on guitar and vocals). Can I get a "get out of vocal jail free" card? HEP ME! (:oD

I recall a video of me doing an original back in the 80's. Jim Carrey doing "Somebody to Love" in The Cable Guy comes to mind.

Nervous vibrato.

If Stevie Nicks can make a career out of doing goat impressions for 2.5 hours several times a week, I'm sure nobody will hold it agin' ya.

"Nervous Vibrato" - Band name alert! (;oD

We performed 3 of my songs so perhaps people though the goat thing on the 1st song was intentional? (;oD

The pitchiness probably comes from not being warmed up, and also just not being in shape because you haven't sang in a year. The voice is like any instrument -- if you don't practice, you're not going to play as well.

gdw3 - You are correct.

I sang the songs the day before when we went over the songs with the drummer's 16-year old bass player son who I'd never played with before.

Dolemite - Yaaaaas it was to my ears. (:oD

Singing looks like it shouldn’t matter whether you practice but nothing is further from the truth.
Just knowing the words isn’t the same as “owning”the song. To own it you need to be comfortable with the tune and lyrics. Reading it off a tablet or tattered notebook as you go makes it easy to remember lyrics but doesn’t let you fit them in comfortably unless you’ve gone over the tune and checked it out with your breathing and manner of singing.

thumbpicker - I wrote and recorded these songs and do "own" them literally and figuratively.

The goat thing my voice produced was only on the 1st song.

thumbpicker, It hadn't really dawned on me before about "owning" the song but that is so true, I have to sing nearly all the songs our trio covers and I'm not really a vocalist so we only do songs I can pull off without sounding too fakey, My rule is "Pick the battles you can win". Or, if I can't sing it and own it I won't do it.
