Picked up an Airline "Tremolo Reverb" model 52-9025A. Everything works but the reverb sounds terrible. I know Silvertone amps were noted for their bad sounding reverb but this is even worse. Anyone know if that is normal? Any ideas what might be a good replacement tank? The original is in a sealed box that is tiny. I think something like an 8AB something or other might work size wise. I am in the process of trying all of the tanks I have lying around.

Call sponsor AES above. They are experts as cross-referencing reverb tanks for vintage amps.

One thing to check first is the connections between the RCA in and out jacks and the transducers in the reverb tank. The way they connect to the transducer at each end is quite fragile; it's a pinch connector that cuts the wire insulation and pinches the conductor. Sometimes the connection is intermittent due to a broken wire.

Treat the transducers very gently.

Thanks for the advice. The reverb tank is small and appears to be sealed. I do get a resistance measurement at both input and output so I think the little wires are ok. Since I am getting some (ugly) reverb I think I will leave things as they are. I did try 5 new tanks of different specs and got nothing out of them. If any FDP member has heard one of these amps, please chime in.

Did you call AES for advise as Peegoo suggested?

The schematic shows a reverb transformer driver. Best guesses I found were it's a 10k:8ohm transformer, so a tank that would work in a Fender, with an 8 or 10 ohm input should work.

The weak point might also be the 12AX7 used as the reverb driver (V2). The schematic doesn't show the other half of V2 used in the amp, so one could try a 12AT7 for stronger drive and perhaps improved reverb tone.

Thank you for all the research and the information. I had tried a fender style tank and got nothing out of it. The tank that came in the amp was the only one that worked at all. Someone who didn't use reverb liked the amp and I sold it as is. Again thanks for the work you put in.
