This has turned out to be a timely topic.

I have a Tokai 335 coming in today for a pickup change and set up.

Should be pretty straight forward. (famous last words)

I'll be back here if I get near the point of a cranial explosion ;^)

Hah!! Wouldn't you know it, it's a bloody LEFTY!

The guy didn't mention that on the phone.

When he turned up this morning, I said "Uh-oh, I only have right-handed tools!"

Thankfully, he got it...

I was getting smugly confident doing hollow bodies until I recently did a complete circuit replacement on a thin body Gretsch with center block and no f-holes.

Ater that one I felt like I needed a week's vacation in Hawaii to recover.

Well, pickup swap went smoothly. (mostly)
I used the surgical tubing method for the pots and string method for the jack.

The owner gave me a set of Gibson 490's to replace the stock Tokai's.

I just have to do the set up this afternoon. The tricky part is playing the blasted thing after making adjustments.

All I can get out of it are minor 7 barre chords and strum *up*!
If I think *real* hard I can do a half-arsed blues or minor pent scale, but it makes my head hurt!

I'll post some pics for you lefties as I want some for my "portfolio".

Oh, and don't even get me started on the numbered orientation!
I have a new appreciation for the suffrage of you left-handers. Jeesh!

Te 52 - If one of those Gretsch ever come my way, I think I'll refer it on. (what's your postal address?) ;^)

Unless it has reverse taper pots, it should be wired righty. If it’s not, the tone pots won’t work right at all.

They're reverse taper pots (C), and maybe I'm an idiot here, but the 0-10 on the knobs doesn't jive with the position of rotation IYKWIM.

Nice!

Yeah, in this case you'd need reverse numbered knobs or un-numbered knobs.

"...maybe I'm an idiot here, but the 0-10 on the knobs doesn't jive with the position of rotation IYKWIM..."

When you go to adjust the knob, just take the number you would want to go to on a non-lefty guitar, change its algebraic sign and add 10, that will tell you what number to turn to on your non-reverse-numbered reverse taper knobs. ;-P
