The fourth annual FDP jam in DC—the March on Washington—took place last Sunday and was a good time.

Thanks to all who participated, especially those who drove down from the NJ/NY area; you guys have been crucial to getting us established! We were 19 participants, despite a couple of regulars who unfortunately called in sick.

We’ve continued to add new folks from the DC area: notably a keyboardist, a bass-player/vocalist, and four twenty-somethings who brought tons of enthusiasm, along with their talents on vox, guitar, sax, and drums.

The youngsters, plus others spanning the gap to the usual FDP demographic, are having an impact on the songlist—bringing in The Cure, Beth Hart, Amy Winehouse, Susan Tedeschi, 4 non-blondes. But the perennial favorites still dominated the 44 songs: Beatles, Stones, Tom Petty, etc. Afterward, one youngster commented, we ought to do a jam with only Doobie Brothers! Takeaway for jam organizers: Young people are the future--so recruit them!

In addition to providing energy, the youngsters gave some jam veterans an opportunity to mentor; I observed conversations about the drummer’s role and equipment and about improvising on saxophone. Our newest keyboardist, thought not so young, was once a concert pianist; she received real-time coaching on rock playing that eased her anxiety; “I realized that the keyboardist is part of a team and doesn’t have to be perfect.”

After five hours of solid music, we finished “all-in” on the Allman Bros.' “Soulshine.” and packed up, with some already anticipating a 5th anniversary jam in March 2020. Plan to join us!
