So the last book in Barry's series is about soloing. It's actually a gold mine of good comping that he does too, so I am working on that as well after transcribing it.

Anyway, been on this solo for a bit over a week but not everyday with the pains I have.

Did some takes tonight, man there were better but they had some big mistake I couldn't live with. And of course they were things I never get wrong in practice, but when the red light is on... So anyway, this one is pretty representative of where I am at. Once I get comfortable enough with the form of the tune, I will try to solo over the other half of the recording.

One step at a time, I suppose. Interesting to have insight into Barry's thinking. I can't come up with a solo that good to save my life but I suppose that's what practice is for...

I find the slurs particularly difficult in this style of playing.

End goal is to learn the comping part well enough to read along and record that, then the written solo followed by improvisation.

Thoughts? Questions? Critiques?

Great job man. I can't solo to that style of music to save me. I'm not a jazz player.

Thanks! I'm not very comfortable soloing on a lot of jazz tunes either, but hoping learning this book will help things a long. There really is no substitute for really internalizing the changes of a tune I have found. Both theoretically and aurally. One day at a time I suppose.

I'll be the first to admit some days I just need to play some blues or rock. Take a breath and all.

Two observations:

1. Your articulation is really even from note to note. It doesn't sound to me like you were using compression. If you weren't, WOW, great touch. If you were, you did a really fine job of making it sound like you didn't :o)

2. Your timing is bang on! Are you using a pick? Or fingers?

Thanks for the kind words, big G!

No compression was harmed in the production of this track, har!. Just my Strat straight into my direct inject on the preamp into the software.

So I was using a blue Tortex which is 1.0mm I think. I enjoy the sound of that Tortex for slightly mellower attack vs my usual Ultex which has a great sound for rock and country. No hybrid or fingers used this time. Thank goodness! It was tough managing just the pick!
