I don't have that, but I do have a ligiment that stands tall in the middle of my right palm. Will try to edit post with a PIC later.

(edited to add: Linked is a comparative shot of my right and left palms. I am right-handed and play finger-style exclusively (no slapping, thumbing or flat-picking). Hopefully you can see the muscle or ligament (arrow) that is visible in my right palm but not in the left. I think it is a result of plucking with the middle finger. Doesn't cause any pain: just looks a bit odd. I also use the index, but nothing similar seems to have resulted there. The contrast between the two hands is even more apparent to the touch than to the eye.

In reference to your OP, Roly: the tips of my thumbs won't bend like yours. What you see in the linked PIC is as far as mine will bend and it has always been like that.

No, my thumbs are the same, but the pads of my fretting fingers are thicker and wider on my left hand. If I put my palms together and you compare the left and right hand they’re like from two different people.

Yes, my thumbs do look rather grim.
It's a seasonal thing.....they are much worse in the winter.
Stack, split, and load ten cords of wood every winter and I expect your thumbs would look similar.
The shiny bits on my thumbs are crazy glue....it's a life saver.
I could do the lotion thing but I need callouses, soft hands don't work for me.
You might want to investigate "Duputryns Contracture".
I have it, so does Willie.
Crap builds up on your tendons and eventually causes your fingers to curl in.
First sign is what I see in your picture.
Do you have Nordic blood?
cheers

"Stack, split, and load ten cords of wood every winter and I expect your thumbs would look similar."

Living in a more temperate climate than yours, I was able to get by on a cord-cord and a half when I had a woodstove and always wore gloves when I cut/split it the wood. But maybe you don't like wearing gloves: I know I don't for certain tasks.

You might want to investigate "Duputryns Contracture".

I looked into that awhile back. I think my main problem is more along the lines of CMC arthritis in both thumbs. It's made holding a flat pick or doing lots of barre chording (as opposed t'wood cording) very painful which is why I switched from guitar to bass pretty exclusively about 5 years ago: it doesn't bother my hands the way playing guitar does.

The fact that the tips of my thumbs don't bend back (must be a congenital defect, as I have always had it) probably has made correct/classical left-hand technique/hand positioning difficult for me all along on guitar, which likely didn't help things any.

_________

"Do you have Nordic blood?"

Mostly English, Irish, Highland Scot and Danish. The Scottish part also likely includes a generous dollop of Nordic blood as well, since the Vikings were very active in the part of the country where our clan was situated. People in those parts were called "Gall-Ghàidheil" ("foreign Gael") because of the heavy Norse influence and, shall we say, "inter-mingling".

Why do you ask?

Hi TD

I ask because Duputryns is genetic and is common for those with Nordic blood.
