C.F. Martin Co. apparently has decided to change direction from their base of building guitars in the style and quality that made their reputation and have discontinued many models such as the Vintage series. This will include the 0-28VS, 00-28VS, 000-VS and The D-18V and D-28V variants.
Other models may also be discontinued.

In their place new series to include "re-imagined" and MD will be the mainstay. The standard series will be modified with newer neck features.

Other possibilities are the closing of the original factory on Sycamore St, Nazareth, Pa.

Their new facility and Mexican enterprise will stay in operation.

Gold frets and liquidmetal bridge pins.. Wow, I have waited for years for this.

It is about time they
followed Taylor into the future.

Damn. I think what’s happening is many of the traditionalists are dying off and being replaced by people who could care less about things like vintage specs or the things that made Martin special in the first place.

This is either a rumor or a myth... I have not seen news of this anywhere. I post and read on the Martin forum daily, and there has been NO discussion of this whatsoever.

Martin seems to be doing quite well with their American operation.

So from what reliable source did you read/hear this?

Also, Martin recently invested a BUNCH of money updated their USA plant to be more green and financially efficient - they wouldn't bother if they were moving overseas...

I don’t think they are using the original factory for production anyways. Just storage I think.

Without actual evidence, all this is is rumor mongering.

But the world of guitars is changing and dwindling. When the baby boomers are old and gone, lots of things we took for granted in our time will disappear or change beyond our recognition, I suspect.

"It all comes down to profit margin."

You have just characterized companies that are in business for the bottom line. It's a game of numbers.

Generally speaking, if you are a company that is not growing, you're probably dying. If you are Martin and you've saturated your market, where do you go?

Why would someone from customer service share this with someone when there's been no public announcement of it? I would think the employee would be fired for sharing something like this, whether it is true or false.

I'm still callin' this a rumor...

Companies do not "announce" such information in the media.? They announce "good" news.

Keep in mind they are also introducing new models and expanding the Mexican operation.

Time will tell.

too many guitars and not enough hands
Mar 6th, 2019 03:01 PM   Edit   Profile

My 2cents,

IT got me thinking there was an there was an interview with C F Martin IV (reverb or a guitar mag cant remember where) he said they would be building guitars with new and different woods and materials.

But would still build whatever you wanted but in the custom shop.

So its a possibility an OM28 or D28/D35 might become a custom shop only model

The entire "V"intage series is gone replaced with new age "re-imagined" models as well as turning the "standard" into an amalgamation of new age and the standard and the vintage.

I can only suggest you look at their website.
Note that the critical pages of their web site are devoid of information and seemingly under construction.
