I have to have half my thyroid removed due to a nodule growing on it. I am concerned about effects to the voice. Has anyone had this done?

What has your doctor said about this? I think it would depend on how extensive the surgery is--and the specific areas of the thyroid that are being removed.

I looked online and found this:

Thanks Peegoo. I've read all that stuff. My wife works in medical billing so she has given me all kinds of information and so has the doctor. I was looking to see if anyone else has had this and how much it affected their voice. I'm usually a fast healer. Just had carpal tunnel surgery a week and a half ago on the left hand and am already playing guitar. The nodule growing on my thyroid is about the size of a golf ball and already putting pressure on the nerves and it causes hoarseness and some pain when I sing now. We have 3 gigs before the surgery is scheduled and a month off after the surgery which is April 17th. I am the main lead singer in our band and sing a lot of backup. I am already in voice theroapy due to a rutured vocal chord that has healed. No fun to be me right now.

Oh maaaaan...when you're the main vocalist, there's no such thing as a sick day.

I hope it goes well for you, brother.

So far so good. The insurance approved the vocal therapy. It's funny but mostly I'm humming scales while blowing through a straw into water. I've noticed an improvement already in strength an endurance of my voice. The thyroid will be removed in a couple weeks. The ruptured vocal chord has healed and looks much better. I lost a lot of good technique when I had total abdominal reconstruction surgery a few years ago. I couldn't really use the diaphragm correctly and so bad breathing habits began and also incorrect singing by trying to use throat muscle to compensate. I really needed this and didn't even realize it till now. Plus it helps that the first therapist I was seeing looked like Reese Witherspoon. She took another job out of state and the ypung lady that took over looks like a young Bythe Danner. I think their hiring manager has an eye for therapists that look like actresses....

Well it has been a week since the surgery. It went well and I am healing quickly. I have not sang in full voice yet. Still feels a little uncomfortable. No stitches, super glued me back together. I think it will be okay.
