Before anyone jumps me for my crass consumption, remember - I've sold 4 guitars since Christmas day!

Found a good deal on a "used/mint" lefty Gibson J-35 - looks like nice wood - the Sitka top looks much nicer than the top on my previous J-45 (this one shows no signs of runout).

The J-35 has vintage bracing versus the J-45's *modern* bracing, so it will be interesting to see if I think I hear any differences from my previous Gibson (memory, however, is a dangerous thing).

The J-35 is now out of production - I think Gibson decided to concentrate on their new lower priced models (with thinner bodies and walnut b&s) that are based on their "standards," and this one may be too close to them in price.

I'll say more and post a couple pics when it arrives. Sadly, it's coming in on Friday, which means it will probably be in a cold truck all day, and I may not be able to open it until very late that evening (or not until Saturday).

Developing...

I would imagine a lefty J-35 would be hard to find, nice score. Hope it's a good one.

Well - bummer - because of lots of snow, my secretary went home early, and I was out of the office, so ... my guitar didn't get delivered today! Argh!

You all know how frustrating this is! So now I wait until Monday (of course, this has to be Friday!)...MONDAY!!! for UPS to deliver it. Sigh...

Finally arrived today...2018 (used) Gibson J-35. Man was it hard to wait through the weekend for it to arrive! But well worth the wait!

After changing the strings to 80/20 Bronze mediums (which I don't care for on anything but Gibsons) and a slight tweak of the truss rod, this thing plays and sounds glorious! When this thing gets some hours on it, it will be even better.

I will say - Gibson's build quality is not at the level of Larrivee or Martin (or Taylor), but when they get it right, it has a 'sound' you won't find too many other places. I will say the woods on this one are very nice (perfect Sitka top with no runout) - sorry the pics aren't clearer - I'll get some better ones in sunlight soon:

That looks great!

I like the old-style script inlay on the headstock.

Nice, mikey!

I took one of these in trade but didn't keep it long. I decided, once again, that I just am not a Gibson guy. The person who bought it, however, was totally delighted with it. I must admit that it was a handsome, well-built guitar.

What you have there is a nice counterpoint to your several Martins, something "other than" for when you want/need a change from that "Nazareth sound."

I have one, a 2016. Not as pretty as the Martin SPD-16 I sold, knowing I could only afford one. It's more responsive than the Martin and about half the weight. I have found Gibson acoustics to be hit and miss, but this one is my keeper.
Enjoy!

This one is also very light - so much so that it feels "neck heavy" like an SG - and it has a very beefy, '59 feeling neck. Feels really good.

Yes, they have a different sound than Martins, which is why I wanted to find another one after parting with my J-45. This one's very resonant and warm, but still has some sparkle - it doesn't sound like it's stuffed with blankets! Really rumbles. Just right.

I like the shorter scale too; just seems friendlier to me.

I just like the shorter scale for what it does to the tone.
