At this late date, I'm learning this great tune. Got the chords and all, but the guitar solo is eluding me. First question is, what key is the song in? I'm thinking C, but not sure. So major or minor pentatonic, neither seems to fit. The recorded version has been raised in pitch, so that makes it even harder to figure. I'm probably over-complicating it.

The Kinks' tune? It's not in any key. Just play flurries of notes in a very spastic, angst-ridden manner.

Har!

Are you talking the Van Heflin version?

Yessir, the original Kinks version. I'm spastic, so I can cover that, but I'd still like to get close to the original. I'll admit freely that I'm not the best at figuring out these things by ear.

It's close to the key of G in standard tuning.

The solo is played in the G major pentatonic scale,

Here's notation and tab.

The solo tab is pretty dang close to the record.

i remember hearing that solo when the song came out and thinking, what on Earth is going on? I played a semi-pathetic version of it in the band I was in (high school years).

It is with trepidation that I question the astute Mr. Peegoo - wouldn't the solo be in G minor pentatonic? Also, where did you find such a nice written-out version? I see things like that in "as recorded" books and such, but almost never when doing an online search.

Joe, thanks for correcting that! It's G minor pentatonic.

I found the chart using DuckDuckGo, searching on the following text string

you really got me kinks TAB

The first page or two of search returns showed links to all the usual TAB sites that require logging in, downloading their app, or paying for a membership.

I always skip over those and look a little deeper.

Slightl off-topic, but is that the solo that Jimmy Page claims to have played instead of Dave Davies?

Yes, HenryJ, that was going around back in the '70's. I think that in recent times, that solo was attributed to Dave Davies, not Mr Page.

I wonder if Dave was a Link Wray fan. That solo sounds like Link incarnate.

I think it maybe in G mixolydian. G-F, A-G, D-C for the chords in the tune. Playing a G minor pentatonic should make you golden for the solo.
