I am still

the reason for the season!

Sweetwater had a deal on a demo model of something that's been on my radar for a bit, and I couldn't say no as I'm a terrible abuser of the T-Racks plugin Pultec EQ1A.

I can report that it does as advertised - it's not a radical EQ that will do the moon and the stars, but more a relatively subtle "makes things sound good" at most settings.

I'm also using this one as (mostly) a channel strip, as I've taken to using the plugin for that quite often and...this lets me have actual tubes and not deal with software.

I can report it's very close to the hardware units I've gotten to fiddle with in the past and the plugins, as a recent Sweetwater shootout detailed as well - it's not a PERFECT clone, but has the character and sound and gets me better than the plugin at a very affordable price.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a pair of real Pultecs and a couple 670 compressors and....but....

I don't have 200k to spend on some outboard gear.

But I do have $299 (ok, a bit less on the demo) and a King Diamond action figure.

So the thread isn't useless.

My buddy has one of these and enjoys it. Pultec EQs are great. They were mainstays in the old days of 4 and 8 track recording. Wonderfully gentle but cool unique pieces.

Congrats!

Yea, I've always loved them but they were beyond my budget so it's been slumming it (relatively) with the half-decent plugin.

The only negative I can say is that I'm going to have to get another pair to use for mastering work, which means I'll need a bigger rack stand on the desktop

I'm trying to remember if these don't have an output attenuation knob... I seem to recall that being one downside.

Yea. 'Tecs are expensive. The Pulse techs are widely regarded but there's no way I could spend that. I bet the Klark gets decent curves and sounds that are much more aligned with my wallet.

Now I want some. Damn.

Sometimes I throw one(UAD) on a bass and push up that 30hz low band. Mmmmmmm mmmmmmm. Lovely.

They don't, but there's folks doing mods on them and adding. I have a defacto one since I'm using it as a channel strip (and the other two I'll end up getting will be fed into a preamp with headroom to spare, so..) and can boost/cut as needed.

I was able to dial in my usual settings on the T-Racks version quickly enough that I'd imagine it's the same with any of the mostly authentic versions out there!

That's excellent! I imagine the differences between the high end versions and the Klark are more of the minutae.

As do I, or variance in individual units, drift over time, et cetera.

True. Pultecs are all tube, aren't they?

I really should have a couple of these. I love plugins but I do feel there is something more to the hardware. It's more fun, too.

Yea.

The real-deal have more tubes (the boost/makeup section IIRC), but...tubes run at proper voltage in a good circuit are grand.
