Just asking as we played a "Xmas" gig last night at a golf club (yeah I know :-) ) and the audience started asking for songs that aren't in our set list, but we felt obliged to have a crack at them.

We busked a very decent version of Maggie May. Then someone asked for Summer of '69, which I know, except our other guitarist started playing it in C. Everybody knows it's in D, right?

Any horror stories/ success stories?

Yes we take requests. We don't always play them but sometimes we do. If someone in the band has played it before or knows the song, we'll give it a go.

And Ayns, what difference does it make if your audience is at a golf club, a bar, or a street corner?

Carry a capo? I would take requests, but only for Mustang Sally, Freebird and Stairway to Heaven...

My band only plays originals so no, unless they're requesting one of our songs.

I like to play the song list. If we play all of the songs, then might consider a request. We don't play that often so it's not a big problem.
One of our singers always tries to throw in a song that really doesn't fit. Most of the time, we vote him down. I'm talking about songs we haven't played in 10 years.

We are an instrumental surf music band....no vocals. If you know the Ventures and Los Straightjackets you know us. We play all the major recognized surf songs so we can play almost any request. But, one time a nice lady asked us to play some Bee Gees....yikes

If it's something we normally play or have had played in the past, no problem.

No, not this three piece I’m in now. Al the guitar came from head banger, big hair era, Brownie the mandolin it’s all oldtime and mountain music, and me and my bass are vintage R&R, blues with a leaning towards jazz.

If either of these two know a tune we can pull it off, but I prefer to play what we practice.

Usually. If I don't know the particular song I might do another from the same artist. If I don't believe I can offer something suitable I'll sometimes write down the request and work on it later.

Not usually. Last Saturday night, near the end of the night, someone requested some AC/DC. I immediately teased them with the opening to "You Shook Me", and they went nuts.

The female singer said she could sing it, so we went for it. Got through the whole song without a hitch, and my wife later told me it was really good considering the band didn't really know the song. (I do, of course)

If we know the song we will play the request. We get to play a lot of songs we like. Why not make the crowd happy? It's a payoff in the end. We were
once tipped $400 for playing House of the Rising Sun. I'd even play Old Time Rock & Roll for that kind of $$.
We do have limits. When someone yells "Free Bird" I play the opening to Stairway to Heaven.

I was playing a Farmers Market with my band a couple of weeks ago. A guy came up and said, "Know any Johnny Cash?" I blanked out for a moment and then lit into "Big River" and probably got 85% of the words right. I hadn't played it in ages. He gave us a good tip. So, sure, if I think I can pull it off.
