FDP Forum / Fender Guitars: Telecasters / 1968 Fender Telecaster Custom Color (Original)

My wife has owned this tele forever, it's a 1968 custom color Telecaster with a bigsby, all factory original. The thing is she's always said it's shoreline gold but I know it's not Shoreline Gold. It looks to me exactly like the custom shop HLC Gold guitars, and it matches up with the 1960s custom color chart for HLC Gold, but I can't find an example of a 1960s Fender HLC guitar. Does anyone know how rare this color is? (Btw it is the slimmest neck, nicest playing tele I've ever played). I don't see where to upload pics here, but if anyone wants to see it just tell me where I can upload pics.
Cheers

Fender offered custom colors that were not on their color chart. They jobbed out these custom finishes to local auto body shops.

Go to imgbb.com and upload a pic or three. No account or sign-in required. Copy the url and post it here.

That could be a one-off. Gruhn’s Guitar shop in Nashville is perhaps the place to call. For a fee they’ll do an appraisal for you. You send them clear, detailed photos and they do the appraisal. Give ‘me a call. It’s a good place with an honest crew.

Picture of the tele from about 20 years ago, better representation of its original color.

That last one might be your best bet for conveying the color of the guitar to someone long-distance. But--you'll forgive me--I've made my living as a photographer and the quality of these images will not help much if you contact someone like Gruhn's via internet, etc. They'll need better detail and lighting in order to guide them. Having the images taken with an actual camera and quality lens, with good balanced lighting is in your best interest if you want some accurate information.

Just my 2 cents...

Lol, yes my photographs leave a lot to be desired and that's good advice if we decide to move forward we will need to present the guitar better. Thank you.
Btw, yes that picture represents the guitars original custom color much better, my guess is Firemist Gold. The color it has faded to is absolutely gorgeous in person, though.

'68 was an interesting year for Fender in general and the Tele in paerticular. There are the early '68s, which are essentially '67 spec, then there are the later '68s which made the shift to what you saw in the next five or six years. The later ones lost the wire channel between the pickups and are the beginning of the plastic coated wire. The finishes on the later ones are polyurethane, most of the early 68s are nitro. All of them have the "F" logo tuners, which aren't the greatest. '68 saw quite a few custom colors, small runs of 50 or so. Mine was one of about 50 sparkle silver / rosewood with flame maple necks and brown cases. Similar to the Buck Owens but with no binding and rosewood instead of maple fingerboard. It's a long story I posted on here many years ago. Whatever, don;t modify that guitar, period!
