FDP Forum / Fender Bass Guitars and Bass Amps / 1953 Precision

Hi! I am new at the forum. I just bought a 1953 Precision. Not a museum piece but a real player. It's been routed and repaired, refinished and the electronics were badly done. Pickup was newer too.
I restored the electronics according to 1953 specs and added original knobs.
She looks very good but most importantly, the sound is amazing!
I want to sort out the history of this bass. Maybe someone knows more about it.
All I know is that the previous owner is Detlef Schmidt and it is #685 in his book.
He told me he had it for 13 years and is looking for the Ebay bill from 2005.

Kind regards,
Erwin (Holland)

Detlef is well-known to me and a leading authority on the old planks. I joined him years ago in producing the book he did on the oldest and the most vintage of Fender basses, the Precisions from 1951-1954. At one time Detlef had one of the largest collections of these basses of anyone out there and he may still have quite a stash.

TalkBass (forum for bassists) would be a good resource. Post there and see if you get any good leads.

Thanks for the kind words about the book.

I wrote the lengthy feature story that opens the book.

Detlef did the photo display throughout the rest of the book.

This is probably the best forum for knowledge on these instruments, and most other Fender basses.

There once was a saying in this forum, "No pictures... no bass!"

Do you have pictures to share with the forum? :)

Lewis, Mach1970 is not a contributing member so unless he has another means to show them I am afraid we are out of luck.

Been ages since I've been here. Which bass did you buy from Detlef? I restored one in his book and he used to have all his USA purchases sent to me and would come to the states once a year and pick them up. Can't believe this forum still has no picture posting feature.
