I hate that guy. As I am getting older I can't practice like I used to. Pain in my knuckles doesn't usually bother me while I'm doing it but, it gets me the next day.

If I play relatively simple stuff it doesn't bother me as much but, I'm one of those guys who is always trying to overcome some kind of technical shortcoming so I'm usually working on things that are hard for me to execute. That leads to tension in my hands until I get to the point where I can get over the mental hump and be able to relax and use less effort. Then I move on to something else I can't do.

I used to be able to play all day long, literally. If I did that now I would have to eat analgesics like M&M's the next day. The pain seems to bother me less if I can give it a good workout every day. Unfortunately I don't have the time. So, I give it a good thrashing on the weekends. I hope I'll still be able to play when I retire in about 5 more years. That's when I'll have the time to play whenever I want.

Sorry to hear it. I had to give up my main instrument when I was just 16 due to practicing all day.

Guitar is constantly threatened for me since I was 24 or so. The last 6 years have been brutal, and even saw me taking a whole year off playing.

My cervical spine issues make me quite off balance and dizzy from practicing despite trying every strap, pillow and position known to man, and right now I am fighting cubital tunnel in both elbows, golfers elbow tendonitis as well as my usual dequervains in the left wrist and thumb. Now I feel this burning/ache coming in some of my finger joints and top of the hand. Most people don't believe me when I say I have these issues since I am only 34, which makes me want to pull my hair out. Though I have had lessons for a long time with the former USAF Airmen of Note guitarist as well as a lesson with the current Army Blues guitarist, and they both can't find issue with my technique that would cause such a thing. So it isn't for a death grip on the neck.

Combine that with docs just basically implying I should get a real job and who cares if I have to give up guitar.

Tried various books, chiropractic, supplements, stretching, exercises from PT.

All rheumatism blood tests came back negative.

I hate it because I am trying to get practice in to get into some gigs and make some cash for my years of practice. I've been playing an instrument of some kind since I was 10. I can't imagine life without it.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I wish I could offer some hope. Bodies just don't cooperate, though. Here's hoping we can continue to do what we love.

Sorry to hear that both of you have woes that affect your playing.

You been stalwarts of the FDP and the chop shop over the years and your suggestions and advice has been invaluable.

Hope you can resolve your issues and continue playing to a ripe old age

I have arthritis all over. Fake hips, shoulder problems, and some hand and finger issues, including tendonitis from the malformed joints. I'd be willing to bet the irritation of the tendons are more of a problem for people with arthritis than they realize. Things that help me:
-Glucosamine/Chondrotin/MSM for the joints.
-Flax seed oil and collagen for tendon flexibility. I think especially the collagen has helped a lot. I used to not be able to raise my arms above shoulder level. Now they are greatly improved.

For me, the tendons get irritated rubbing over the arthritic joint, which causes them to contract, which makes worse rubbing and less range of motion. It's a vicious cycle. But it is more manageable now, with the supplements, as well as PT.

Also, get physical therapy! They can show you things to do that help. I do certain stretches every day, under the warm water of my shower. But I can tell the supplements are making it easier for me to stretch and have more of a range of motion.

Hey Gordon,

I am curious about your supplements. I have heard about collagen but not sure where to get it or what to get. I am interested since you seem to think it helps...

Tried the GCMSM without much luck, but I know there are other mechanisms at play that dictate whether or not your body can utilize it.

The Glucosamine takes a while to do anything. It's subtle, but I can tell when I don't take it for like a week.

I get pretty much all my supplements from Swanson Vitamins. I won't put the link here, but their website is VERY easy to find. I don't know the specifics of the dosages off the top of my head, but I never take mega-doses, so it's generally just a once daily thing. If you want more details, let me know.

Also, I just had a massage a couple days ago, and I make sure that she gets my hands and forearms. Big help.

Before I retired I was plagued by this particularly during the winter. Construction work is rough during the best of times with straining hands etc. but add extreme cold to that and it’s even more fun.
I have a friend who is a bit younger than I am who is excellent at guitar. He gets frustrated when he tries to show me some chords or techniques he uses and I can’t do them correctly. But I find an alternate way to get through it. My paws don’t bend certain ways anymore. Playing should be fun not a lesson in pain so you adapt..using slides alternate chord inversions etc. just don’t stop.
