I just bought a noise gate pedal, and was wondering where to put it in my pedal chain. I have never used one.

At the end of the signal chain if you're not using time based effects like delay, otherwise just before your delay.

It really depends upon a few other things to be considered.

What style of music?
Guitar type? Noiseless pickups?
And last but not least: What is in your "chain"?

I have noiseless pickups.
And in spite of that I still have two noise gates in the path before the amp. Boss NS-2s.
And this is NOT for extreme death-thrash metal stuff.

But the ultimate answer as with all other pedals is: Place it where it gives you the result you want. There is no single be all end all location.

The style of music is blues and classic rock. My guitars are LP Tributes, one with mini-humbuckers, and the other with full humbuckers. The amp is a Marshall DSL40, which I bought a few months ago. I am getting hum with just the guitar going straight into the amp.
