FDP Forum / Fender Guitars: Stratocasters / Need help IDing early 80s Strat

I got this guitar a while back. It’s not in great shape, and has had some less than stellar mods. The serial number says it could be from CBS 82-85. I dont know whats been changed on it as i dont really know enough about vintage strats. Can anyone help me figure out what year this is/what’s original and what isn’t?

It's a 1983 Elite Stratocaster, that someone replaced the original pickups with "normal" Strat type pickups and switching.

An Elite should have 3 flat Lace Sensor looking pickups (but slightly bigger) and push-button switches. The volume and tone knobs had rubber rings around them too, I guess to make it easier to grip.

I'll look for a pic on the innerwebs.

Agreed. The body, neck, and bridge are original.

Everything else is a mod--intended to fix what was wrong with the original Elite.

Fender issued a similar Telecaster in '83. Players did not go for the modern push-button controls. The hardtail bridge on the Strat was okay, but the vibrato version was pretty lackluster.

The Elite series didn't sell like Fender thought it would, and it was gone from the catalog in short order.

These in original condition are collectible because they're odd ducks.
