Yes, I am sick.

I have pretty severe arthritis in my hands and I hurt long before I get out of bed and playing is painful. Also I get discouraged pretty easily when there are days I just cant play anything right. So, I have this wake up song that I sometimes play exclusively throughout the day because it is the only song I can somewhat feel proud of myself. Naturally it is Tom Petty and Heartbreakers, It's a Wilburys song but I love it.

What do you have to get you going?

After running through some scales to get the fingers moving, at the moment it's Walk Don't Run.

That Petty bloke could write some songs, couldn't he !

Man. I'm sorry to hear that, Therealfrogman. I deal with daily issues as well, though mine is soft tissue, not arthritis. Lots of pain and some numbness at times. It's a sinking feeling when that unrelenting pain gets in the way of your joy.

That aside, lately I have been warming up with not so much a song, but a nice piece or etude rather, by, you guessed it, my guy Barry Galbraith(who I wont shut up about). He did a whole book about harmonic and melodic minor scales with their diatonic chords/inversions. The first one in the book is a two pager in E harmonic minor and after some weeks I got to where I could mostly get through it. It sounds kind nice. I hope to record these some day for posterity. Never know when I just won't be able to play anymore.

I often resort to an original I called "Subtropical Blues". Basically an E tune thingy that works on electric and acoustic, no pick so it gets the left/right hand dexterity going.

Sorry about the Arthur Itis. My left side from shoulder to hand is failing. I've been told carpal tunnel (in both hands) and suspect a rotator cuff issue and some weird neurological issue where my left hand quickly seizes as if a large bogie just squeezes all the fingers together. I would not be a reliable guitarist in a full time band. Fortunately I can still record in baby steps.

Sorry about the arthritis. My PCP tells me that the pain at the base of my left thumb is arthritis, so it's not just you.

I usually play chords through the cycle of 5ths. I have worked up an arrangement of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" harmonized with on 3 to 4 strings of the guitar, but I don't do that until my hands are somewhat warm. There is a subdominant (add2) chord on the word "Bethlehem" that my left hand doesn't always want to form.

That's how I warm up on the guitar.

Something with a strong memorable melody like that works well, HenryJ. Good thinking.

And I really don't hit chords of any kind until I've gone through plenty of single string stuff. Chords when cold, are my nightmare. It really pays to warm up a while and take lots of breaks.

The first thing I will do when I warm up is single string chromatics from open to the 12th fret 1234,1234 4321, etc. I'll say each note name flats then sharps and sing the pitch at the same time. It's helped me home in on things a little more quickly.

Thank you all for the kind words. O little town of Bethlehem... nice. I will try some things you guys have mentioned.

Some days are soooo much better than other days, I have to remember to be thankful for the good stuff in my life. I love music, music isn't overly fond of me it seems ;-)

I know exactly what you mean, my friend. It's really unfortunate.

Worth a try. For some reason, I can't tolerate any fish oil suppliments ranging from Nature Made wal mart stuff to imported icelandic cod liver oil at $50 a bottle. Makes me feel like death after a few days of taking it.

With the guitar I'll start off soft and slow, finger picking, I can't really strum anyways. I'm primarily a bassist, when on stage I play bass, but sitting around the home, camping, going to the beach or parks I'll play guitar, or ukulele.

Permutations of four finger patterns, Anthony Wellington got me doing this. These are all the possibilities.

1234
1243
1324
1342
1423
1432

2134
2143
2314
2341
2413
2431

3124
3142
3214
3241
3412
3421

4123
4132
4213
4231
4312
4321

When I first started playing these I was surprised that some of them my fingers refused to do. The ones I've had the most trouble with I'm hitting at about 75 bpm now. I start at the first fret, advance one fret at a time up to the 12th, If I mess up I start that permutation again and do so until I nail it. When I first started back in May, It took me close to 2 hours or more to get through them, only advancing without a mistake. Five months later I'm doing it in about 10 minutes, on good days maybe 5.

For the stretching I'll run through "Thriller" a few times, mostly 'cause it's a great bass line, and played at the nut. but any 1,3,5 line will work.
