FDP Forum / The 'Pup' Tent / Pickups for new Strat Pro

United States

I just ordered a used mint 2018 Strat Pro off of Reverb. I currently have a Telecaster that I put Texas Special pickups in. I am only into the country/rock scene hence why I tried the Texas Specials in my Telecaster. Would you all also recommend the same pickups in my Strat or something different?

Why do I keep fixing things that work?

Texas specials in a Tele are awesome and would like to try some in a Strat, but have always wanted to try the Hot Noiseless. I have the Lace Hot Gold's in my ash Deluxe Strat and feel they lose the Strat sound and would like to try the Fender Hot Noiseless to see if they are more Fenderish in tone versus the Lace being more mellow but quiet. The Lace Sensor Hot Gold's are indeed more quiet but lose the Strat sound. Because of the pickup placement in the Strat they still get that familiar feeling but not quite the correct tone! I need quiet on the stage but would like to get back more of the Strat tonality.

Got the Texas Specials in my 60th Anniversary Tele. Custom Shop Fat 50's in the Strat and love them too.

I don't much like Texas Specials in strats. Any of the other CS pups are better to my ears. I don't like the emphasis on the upper mids which can make them sound 'spiky'. I have CS54's which are great, and would choose any of the Fender CS pups over the TS, but recently I've been favouring hotter and fuller designs like the Bare Knuckle Irish Tours and the Amalfitano SP. Because more is more!

But playing style and string choice will make a difference as well. I don't hit the strings very hard, and don't play with heavy strings, so the CS54's can sound a bit weak in my hands. I'm happier with a hotter, but not spiky, pickup.
