FDP Forum / Fender Amps: Vintage (before 1985) / "Abby"/" Josie" pups. Sound different?

These two pup winders seem to be the most highly regarded from Fullerton. Anyone hear a difference, if any, between the two? Also, anyone hear a difference in sound between "Abby" & "Josie" pups and early 80's reissue red & grey bobbin pups?

Cuz a huge difference in price as we all know. Is a difference in sound worth the money, besides the different decade collectible value? Same Fullerton equipment used on both decades's pups I understand.

So many variables comparing them though.

About as ordinary as you can get.

I doubt there would be any difference. Both of these ladies put the pickups on a winder and the winder had counters, probably.
I'd say the only difference in these pickups would be the penciled signature which has no effect on the sound.

Thx for the replies, guys. As you know, people ask crazy money for '50s/'60s pups. Maybe just collectibility, not sound. Wish I had a '57 Strat, tho.

Yeah, it's all marketing wank. "Made like Leo made 'em." Right.

Leo was a cheapskate, and used the cheapest stuff he could that was still reliable.

If it weren't for Don Randall riding herd on Leo in the early days, Fender guitars today might be in the same company with dusty & rusty Harmony Bobcats and Stratotones.

Each "Abby" can vary just as much as there can be a variance between and "Abby" and whatever. Even though a winder was used the tension was via hand pressure, and the actual length of one coil can be quite different even though the wind count is dead on. Tension, pressure, humidity (which can cause small but noticeable variations in insulation thickness) and several other factors make hand wound pickups what they are - individual, unique items. Some may sound virtually identical - and some won't.

Peegoo and Silverface, Thanks for the great info. Much appreciated! Glad Leo had Don Randall aboard at Fender!
