I've been using WinZip on my laptop forever. Don't know what version but recently I somewhat recall a newer version piggybacked on another software install. I must have blown through it, installed the new "trial" version which is now over and wants me to pay. No option to pass on this "evaluation" and continue using my old version.

Not cool, man...not cool.

Yeah, it used to be freeware, but now it's "trialware."

Yeesh.

One thing you could try is a system restore--to a date that precedes the bloatware install of the newer version of WinZip.

CO2 ... is there anything it can't do?

I've always been a "MS sucks, but they suck less than Apple" guy.

But they are really pissing me off lately. I have Win 10 on my newer laptop but as always, I didn't opt for their absurdly priced Office suite. In the past, I have just downloaded open source alternative like OpenOffice and it worked great.

Win 10 will not let me (so far) install OpenOffice. I can download it, I just can't install it.

I'm sure there's a way around it -- I just haven't spent the time to figure it out.

I uploaded the zip file to Google Drive, and there I found a utility to unzip it. Byte me, WinZip.

Oh man. Memories. I used WinZip from version 1.0 back in the early 90s. Great little program. I haven’t used it for 10 plus years at least. Zipping seems so...last millennium. Lol

NSR, OpenOffice was bought out a few years ago and a lot of people including its developers moved away from it to LibreOffice, which is free and open source. It looks and works exactly like OpenOffice did, you might have better luck trying that.

I have it on one of my Win 10 machines. It was as simple as downloading and installing - not sure what you're running into?

Plenty of things bug me about the latest Windows 10 release, but that is not one of them. :-)

So if you guys don't use Winzip or the like, how do you handle a software install that is zipped? One of the jingle/royalty free entities I belong to requires musical submissions to be zipped when sent in. Am I missing a new millennium alternative?

Windows opens and creates zipped files, not sure why you'd need WinZip in this century.

Ain't nuthin like it, man.. I remember back in the day when they called it file packing or something. My bro had an IBM 8088 that just flew at around 6 megahertz in turbo mode. Remember turbo mode? I remember my first 386 and boy was I ranting about it..

I'm still running Win 7 because, well, just because. I don't feel like paying subscription for Pro Tools, etc.

Maybe I'm missing something but when I download and click a zip file my laptop looks for Winzip or like utility.

Only because at some point you made a mistake of installing one.
