I have planted a row of Viburnum for privacy around my back patio. These plants rock, they are now hitting close to 10' tall and are the perfect wall of privacy. The other day I was tasked by the missus to trim them down to about 7' and this just about killed me with my existing equipment. What I need is an electric chainsaw that I can extend and cut horizontally. These branches have gotten too thick for traditional hedgers, too clunky and deep to reach up and in with heavy duty pruners. I want to stay electric as I don't want to store gas.

Recommendations?

The horizontal cut at 7’ may be a bit tricky, last year there was a sell on a Harbor Freight 91/2” chainsaw on a 9’ 10” telescoping pole. I figured for 60 bucks not standing on a ladder using a chainsaw on the farm, alone, would be worth it. It was, the thing works as it’s supposed to. I throw the generator on the trailer, pull it with the jeep and can access all kinds of low limbs on the 21 acres.

I'd use a gas trimmer with a 7.5" circ saw blade on it.

Dangerous, I know. But...

Speaking of dangerous, you should've seen the Darwinian setup I tried. Electric hedger, duct taped to the remnants of a telescopic pole saw. Switch duct taped on, so yanking the power cord my only safety. Ladder from the patio side, the back of my golf cart from the other. But like I said, most of the branches are too thick for the hedger's blade.

Mike, was it this one at Harbor Freight?

That’s it. Or very similar.

I have that same one from HF.

It works, but sometimes I wonder if a hedge trimmer would work better.
