Have you noticed that most baseball announcers all sound sort of the same? They usually have a certain mid-range nasal tone in their delivery.

It seems like network and radio producers all know that baseball fans will appreciate the game more if the commentary has a familiar sound to it--even when the announcers are all different.

Is this some kind of conspiracy? Is the Illuminati involved? Perhaps the Trilateral Commission?

I wonder, because this odd, common sonority does not carry over to other sports commentary like football, golf, soccer, etc.

It's odd. But it's definitely there. Listen to guys like Kurt Gowdy and Bob Uecker. Most other play-by-play guys seem to be attempting to sound like them, on purpose or not.

The play by play sound so "off" when the announcer does not have the "correct" vocal quality.

I don't know if its anything more than that's the way its supposed to be. Listen to kids playing baseball, they'll imitate the announcer and it'll be in that same style. It's just what a baseball announcer is supposed to sound like, so if you are trying to be a baseball announcer, you sound that way.

And I disagree that its not the same in other sports. Golf announcers all have to whisper, they basically all sound the same. Many hockey announcers sound the same, also.

Beth Mowins has an Al Michaels voicing to my ears. I watched her first game and she was as good. I think the SF Giants had a woman in the booth for a while.

There's a whole 'nother class of human males who are trained to sound like they are vomiting, specifically to make commercials sound as vile and rude as is physically possible.

Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese were the best.

The guys today way over analyze the game. I thought Tony Kubek was one of the worst over analyzers.

"What I can't figure out is how they stay sober for 9+ innings."

As long as they don't get into the sponsor's product...

Ol' Diz might have said "slood" or "slud" (depending on how you want the spell the past tense of "slide"), but he could say "choicest product of the brewer's art" very well.

My faves were Fred White and Denny Matthews for tha Kansas City Royals back in the '80s. They didn't "overcall" the game, and were always interesting.

I worked the "C" Shift back then and spent many hours in the car listening to them. Plus the Royals were contenders in those days.
