Iceland ties Argentina - OMG!
Messi scores bupkus in Game 1!
C. Ronaldo (Portugal) scores a hat trick!
No USA, no Italy! They didn't qualify!

Having been born & raised in Brazil, I am and will always be part of the 'torcida' for my guys in green, yellow & blue.
Any interest? Who've you got?

I am a soccer fan too. Local games are the most fun for me but I am starting to pay attention to the big picture.

I didn't know you were raised in Brazil. Maybe you could tell us about that sometime. I think it would be fascinating.

I’m not a regular soccer watcher but I do enjoy the World Cup. That 3rd goal Ronaldo scored the other day was an amazing shot.

I really think they should beef up security at these games.
I mean, how many times do we need to see apparent snipers leaving a trail of carnage on the field (pitch)? Players laying on the field with apparent serious injuries, writhing in pain.
Those are some brave men - willing to play under those conditions - willing to take that sort of risk.
LOL

I have been "enjoying" soccer more over the past year or 2.
But most of these guys should have their man cards revoked for that sort of behavior.

I’ve been watch. I like: France, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Argentina but so far the games have been lacking excitement.

I hear you Mikey. For pro athletes, they take embellishment to an all new level.

Never been into soccer but I remember being in SoCal a few years ago at South Coast Plaza and there were hoards of people standing around the TVs at Sears. I wondered who'd been assassinated until someone told me they were all watching the World Cup.

Well archiestone, that was a bit of a mixed bag, Brazil v Switzerland. I expected more of Brazil, the Swiss played well but I thought Brazil would have shown more control of the game. But Coutinho's goal will no doubt be one of the best in the competition.

^ A tie is not a loss! The Swiss focused on making life difficult for Neymar and it sure paid off. Bias aside, I thought the officiating was pretty poor. Onward...

Definitely. I caught a few minutes of the Costa Rica v Serbia game earlier and the ref was allowing, or not seeing, an atrocious level of shirt pulling and grabbing. In the Brazil game, why the VAR ref didn't refer the Swiss goal back to the pitch ref is anybody's guess. Two games in is too early to tell, but it seems like there could be a policy of allowing players to get away with stuff. The cynic in me says that it would possibly make for more action in the games, not all of it positive, which would drive viewer figures and advertising revenue. I hope this isn't the case, I hate dirty play.

I've never been into soccer, but my oldest son likes it better than baseball and American football. He played soccer when he was a boy. My wife was a soccer mom.

I predict soccer will take over in the US, what with concussions and anthem protests in American football.

I am a good 6 2, or was originally, and I was a rugby player and football player, amongst many other sports.

The great thing about football is the spread of physiques. Doesn't matter if you are 5' or 7', you can work it out.

-A crucial skill. Watch Neymar (Brazil) when he gets fouled -- he deserves multiple Oscars.

I watched the Brazil/Switzerland game. I was pretty sure Neymar died several times. I think he's an alien given how quickly he heals.

Anybody see the England v Tunisia match today? Again, massive amounts of shirt pulling by Tunisia, and England players getting wrestled to the ground, Harry Kane the captain twice, inside the penalty box, with no reaction from the ref. The BBC coverage showed replays of several incidents after the game, with Gary Linekar asking his fellow hosts, "do you like wrestling?"

Not a fan. The parents of my generation steered their kids to soccer to keep them from playing football. Supposedly to keep them from getting concussions. Well a game that makes you hit a ball with your head is not going to cause any head trauma, right? (shakes head)

But it's more boring than watching a birdy fest on a golf course.

When I drive to places that used to host pick up football games, they are now filled with soccer games. I'd probably get in trouble for mentioning the citizenship of these players, lets just say if you want to join in, you better understand a language other than English.

^S'right, football(soccer) is a bit like music, a universal language.

But like most things, if you don't know the nuances and technicalities then it might be less interesting. I can't stand cricket, find it incredibly dull. Then one day I watched part of a game with my dad who knows about it, and it opened up a whole different view of the game.
