I found a quick video about this effect being discovered during a recording session quite by accident. Thought someone here my find it interesting.

Very interesting. And it takes me back to recording demos for kids in the mid 80's who were amazed they could get a 'proper' gated reverb snare sound in our little 8 track studio. I did a neat John Bonham as well, thanks to affordable rack mount digital reverb. We had a Roland DEP-5, but before that there was a Yamaha SPX-90 which I'd run through the compressor which had a gate on it. Happy days.

I have my 80s gated verb in my rack still - the venerable and grainy Midiverb II was a shoegaze classic for a reason. :)

My Quadraverb has that function on it. It does have a very 80s pop flavor.

Yea, the Quadraverb and Q+ go there easily - I'm partial to the very dismal grainy plate in it myself.

Oh, and if you haven't, replace the LCD with a modern one. It is WELL worth the $20 and ten minutes of time to be able to read it without squinting or a Maglite!
