First off, my apologies for crowding this page. I guess a bored/retired guitar schmuck + a slow forum makes for tedium with the frequency of my posts :-)

That said...

I've always loved this song and wanted to do my own arrangement. In the key of F (hey, I'm no Sam Cooke), intro riddled with mellotron samples and synth french horn), starting sleepy and jumping to an E-Street Band arrangement (hey, I'm no Bruce). Had fun with this. Horns are lifted brass also from a mellotron sample. The guitar solo is a nod to Garth Hudson's sax arrangement of The Band's take on the song.

Hey Larry, great job! You have a nice voice, able to be sweet one minute and to add a little gain the next--nostalgic, then soulful with heart. Which is perfect for this song.

I like the way the song builds, and your multicolored chord choices, with energetic guitar riffs at the end.

Excellent. (And it's funny how wrong one's prediction of an FDP'er's vocal type can be.)

Thanks Tiller! I was concerned that all the major to relative minor chord traffic might make the arrangement a bit busy, then I thought, that's never stopped me before. :-p

Very cool! Those are Mellotron samples? Interesting!

I have UVI's mellotron samplebank/VSTi and I love it. It's very degraded sounding though which is cool for other things.

Nice work again! I love the E-Street feel!

Yeah, I downloaded them a few years ago from some random site. Some of the strings with octaves were so bad out of tune I downloaded a free trial of Melodyne and fixed them. My usage of those samples is very tedious; import, cut, paste, adjust volume, tweak beginning and or ending pitch if it feels more natural, etc.

I think the cello samples work the best.

Thanks Sharkie. This was the first track I used a newly purchased Rode NT1-A on the vocal. Jury is still out. I seem to have some sibilance type distortion on the "it'Sssss" that made it's way onto the track. Even with a de-esser in the chain and an attempt to sculpt the eq it's there, as it is bypassing all compression and eq (actually compression seems to tame it a bit). Hopefully I have no dust boogers or particles in there. I keep it covered and use a pop screen.

I seem to recall that thread around here. If you want a retro authentic 60s sound (think Tuesday Afternoon by the Moody Blues) then check out this software. You can just play it in on the keys!

Also, for decently realistic sounds that are not $1000, check out cinematic strings 2.

I think it sounds good. However, this is the typical problem with Asian made capsules(not all of them though).

Once you try something in the higher tier of imports like a Miktek CV4 or a Gefell or Neumann, you'll never want to go back... They handle sounds very differently. I do like the Rode NT1a though. Very good budget mic.

Cool biz, Aaron. Does that require the UVI controller/UI whatever, or can my little MIDI Keystation trigger it?

All I use is my M audio Keystation 49. The UVI software that runs the virtual instrument is free.

The cinematic strings run inside kontakt free player. All good with any usual midi controller.

Thanks Juice, appreciate it.

Aaron, I have the same controller (Keystation), tempted. The UVI Mello seems very flute/other sound centric. Their demos seem to lack the traditional King Crimson/Moodies strings.

I can demo any of the sounds if you want to hear them. I started a cover of Tuesday's afternoon once and it had that famous intro preset. Cant remember if that was the oboe or strings.
