I have a SS40 enroute to me.
It is a 1981 Silverstar with a maple board and CAR.
Copy of a 70s era Strat.
I used to like Van Zandts pickups.
Is there anything else I should consider ?
I am looking for an early Dire Straits guitar sound.

You want pickups that mimic the 1960/1961 Fender Strat pickups, as well as the wiring scheme in use at the time.

Use a 5-way switch instead of the 3-way that was standard at the time. That way you won't have to wedge the switch in the 'in between' position for that Knopfler quack tone.

I really like those Tokai strats. Did you buy it from Japan or US? I was just looking at them on ebay and there is one like yours with grey bobbin pups, they look very vintage. I wonder what these are and how they sound...

Hey Ezra - I have a Tokai Goldstar Sound (early 60’s Strat copy w RW board). It has those same grey bobbin pickups. Mine are low-output, with a lot of zing: glassy, throaty, etc. Great string-to-string definition. Just curious if you needed to replace them or not. I would think they’d pull off the Knopfler thing pretty well.

I did get a set of Tom Brantley pups and put them in a Partscaster.
Very nice pickups.
They replaced some Rio Grande that I did not care for so much.

ezra1... FWIW my Strat with the 57/62s does a great job with the Mark Knoplfer sound.
