FDP Forum / Fender Bass Guitars and Bass Amps / 15" Neo speaker for Genz-Benz Contour 500

In an effort to make my bass rig lighter, I bought this Class D amp combo with 1x15 thinking it would be easier to haul around. It's not bad, but still most of 50 lbs to lift in and out of the car.

The combo is in a box made of 1/2" thick plywood so that helps with the weight.

I believe the 15" speaker has a big ceramic magnet and accounts for most of the weight.

I love the sound and versatility of the amp. Great amp but I'm wondering if I could get a recommendation about a light neodymium speaker that I could maybe replace the ceramic speaker with in order to lighten by a few pounds more.

I've been to Eminence web site ant their 15" neo's are listed under Sound Reinforcement. All 15" "bass amp" speakers listed have ceramic magnets.

Has anybody bought such a 15" speaker for a combo to reduce the weight? If so, how did it go? Thanks all

The Eminence Kappa Lite 3015 is a decent bass guitar speaker. Yes, it is also sold for pro audio applications, but if you look at the numbers...8 Ohms, 450 Watts RMS, Useable frequency 40Hz, 100dB SPL, under 8 pounds in weight. I would certainly consider using one if I opted for a single 15 cabinet.

But that is "my" personal opinion. Your opinion, and the opinion of all others that reply, is every bit as valid as mine.

Couple things from my perspective. You may not save a significant amount of weight by simply going with a Neo speaker. The rest of the combo I imagine is a very large part of the weight. So you may not notice enough change to justify the cost of a speaker. Secondly, I dont believe you can simply change out a speaker and get ideal results. You may not like the sound at all after going to a different speaker...all 15’s do not sound alike, or work as well in the same enclosure.
