I've been giving my girlfriend guitar lessons and wanted something small, inexpensive but reasonably priced for lesson time for me to use. I don't want to bang up a nice acoustic in close quarters. I gave her a Breedlove Pursuit Parlor for her birthday last month and liked the size of the body. A bit of looking around and I found an interesting parlor by Alvarez, the AP66SHB.

I saw it first on Reverb used and went to find out what current street price was in the MF site. They had it for $329 and 15% persent off to net at $280.49. I placed the order and the guitar was delivered yesterday.

I'm actually blown away by this little guitar. It is very well made with nice attention to detail. The gloss finish is a thing of beauty and near perfect. The mahogany top finished in vintage sunburst is very attractive and nicely figured. It has a rosewood fingerboard that is nicely figured and the mahogany neck is finished in satin not gloss as stated in the MF specs, a good thing. Scale length is 24" and it a 12 fret slot head.

I'm really blown away by the tone, volume and quality of this thing. The tuners are a bit wonky and one locked up on me during the restring but lube fixed it. I installed Elixir Nano 12-53 80/20s.

So I added a Fishman Infinity under saddle PU and preamp last night. It was a super easy install. The bridge was already drilled for the transducer wire and the endpin/tail block has a plug in it that was easy to remove to install the endpin jack of the Fishman. No drilling required.

This little baby kinda blows the Breedlove away. Fit and finish it better and it has better tone and volume. The Breedlove came with electronics however the Fishman I installed in the Alvarez sound better the stock system in the breed.

Maybe I just got lucky and was shipped a great one however I would recommend this model to anyone looking for a inexpensive parlor guitar. I'm taking it to my gig tonight. I absolutely will not feel funny about playing this on stage.

I'm having a hard time getting over the nicely figured finger board.

I'm still interested in a fine parlor for the house but this one fills another need and very nicely at that.

I like that finger board. You won't get that with an ebony board. I had a Tele with a similar "swirl", but not as pronounced. I thought that it added a touch of class to the guitar.

I've played a couple of these and both were excellent little guitars.

My first guitar was a '74 Alvarez, and I've always liked them. They make good stuff.

So I played the Alvarez first set last night against my partner who was playing his Taylor 312ce. It actually did quite well and hung in there. The Alvarez is a bit mid-rangey when plugged in with the Fishman Infinity. I was able to dial most of this out however. The way the preamp works on a Fishman Infinity you are dialing up highs and lows basically scooping the EQ with a single knob. I will say it takes some getting used to a 24" scale 12 fret and no cutaway when you are the lead player in an acoustic duo!

I can't complain for the price, it will do its job at home well. If I need a knock around for a sketchy gig now I have one.

The finish on this thing really is fantastic. It makes it look like a much more expensive instrument. I actually got some complements from patrons last night that it was a nice looking guitar, something that has never happened when I'm slinging a Taylor. I'm really taken by the fingerboard, it's just cool.
