If you're at all like me, you've had periodic lower back flare ups through the decades. There was one memorable occasion when I simply bent over to make the bed .... something "twanged" and I spent the next several days crawling rather than walking.

Anthropologists note that some other cultures don't have the lower back problems that we do.
Basically, these unafflicted individuals bend from the hips rather than from the waist. I know .... I didn't get the distinction either at first.

Instead of your back being a "C" when you bend over, it looks flat instead, like a table.

Easier to understand at the link. If you scroll down past the interview there is a GIF showing this "Hip Hinge" method.
The interview describes how to accomplish it.

I tried it out this morning ... you'll know you're doing it right when your hamstrings light up!

Wearing that duty belt for a couple decades didn't do you much good either.

Ragtop, you are Spot On!
Towards the end of my career it was like wearing a belt of lead sinkers with a concentrated colony of fire ants over my lower spine.

One of my ski routines is to streach before and after a day on the mountain. Even light aerobics that warm up the mussels help. I really should do this every day, but I do walk the beach every day along with riding my stationary bike.

"light aerobics that warm up the mussels"

Did you hear the one about the oyster who went to a disco and pulled a mussel?
