He was tucked right next to the fenceline, near northeast corner of he and Isabella's enclosure. We do have evidence of him having a prior emergence near center of enclosure.

I moved Isabella from her cozy brumation in an indoor 15-gallon aquarium, to the outdoor enclosure with Shellby. Shellby is hard-core Mother Nature, and detests aquariums, even during winter.

Too early here in north central Florida, it’s still dipping into the low 30s. Another couple of weeks or so.

What kind of mileage does one get out of a box turtle?
Do they know who you are?

The groundhog who just popped out of his burrow this morning up here sends his regards and best wishes for the spring to his subterranean hibernator amigos.

"Do they know who you are?"

They do respond to our voices, and anticipate food. And I swear Shellby came to me after I strummed Neil Young's "Human Highway" on guitar several years ago.

"Any chance these two could mate?"

Earth-shattering event: last year, we observed them doing the deed, and it was the first time it finally dawned on us that Shellby was indeed a male. He's always had the reddish-brown eyes, but in reading about Three-Toed Box Turtles, I thought a male's eyes were really red. Both are of the same species, so we're thinkin' it could happen. Shellby is 18 or 19 years old now (have had her since he was maybe two-inches across back in 2001)....Isabella is 22 or 23 years old (just got her from a friend in 2014....who had kept her in an aquarium since birth).
