This was Friday night about a mile from where I work. I got home fine in tough commute through snow and wind. He was in his car and the tree came down, I hope it was fast for him.

He was in my H.S. class, boy scout troop and patrol, and we washed dishes at the nursing home.

He was of good humor and had a good sense of humor too. Lost touch after the late teens.

RIP Geoffrey Schmidt.

Sorry for the loss of your friend.

About 10 years ago, in the funeral procession for a childhood friend of my older son, there was suddenly a terrible thunderstorm that toppled a fragile post-Katrina pine tree. The tree fell on a car, killing the driver and paralyzing his girlfriend/passenger.

My DIL was already anxious from the storm, and then this happened to one of the other cars in the procession they were riding in.

Oh man, that's sad and a tough way to get checked out. I guess it's kind of a "Bridge of San Luis Rey" thing ..... it would seem that the slightest tiny thing that happened differently any time in his life would have avoided this fate. Or would it ?

I missed this same fate by 30 seconds two years ago. Came over a rise and saw the tree across the road. It looked like I could pass under the tree in the oncoming lane, but my lane was blocked. The lady coming the other way then said "OMG I JUST SAW that tree fall!!!

Rest in peace, Geoff.

After Hurricane Sandy, one of our Jersey Jam pals was killed removing a damaged tree. RIP Vern.
