What an idiotic, useless and overly-complex "feature". If I obtained a car or truck with this nonsense in it, I wouldn't just it turn off, I'd clip out the wires so this unit could never operate again.

I’m not sure that would work. I would bet this is programming. And the car is, to a point, built around it. I think the best you can do is disable it every time you start the car.

I’m glad our new vehicles don’t have it. They are probably the last holdouts.

So my question is:
Why don't the manufacturers advertise this feature? I'm thinking people would love the gas savings.

I saw an ad for a Cadillac yesterday that steers itself on the expressway. They showed the "driver" sitting back with his hands off the wheel drinking a bottle of water or soda.

Accident waiting to happen IMO.

MJB,

Tesla is already there. And I know there is at least 1 Class 8 truck traversing the country in this mode right now.

So, we have driverless cars, cars that turn themselves off, but still not flying cars as were predicted 50-60 years ago!?!

When "they" were predicted flying cars, "they" never thought of self-driving cars.

My Prius has this. After a while, you don't even notice it. When you mash the pedal the electric engine starts moving the car since there's ZERO delay to start it up. Gas side takes over at like 10 mph or so, and it has higher revs if I'm in "power" mode...which is pretty much all the time!
I get 41 mpg driving around town (my commute is all back roads and traffic lights, so this feature helps a lot!).

Why is everyone else so cranky about this?? Does everyone else not realize that gas is $5-6 a gallon in Germany and Italy and Spain and other places that car manufacturers like to sell their cars?

I think what scares me worse is the level of distracted driving these days. I think that issue is paving the way for this technology.

All in a bid to increase corporate average fuel economy. You can't convince me that this is a good idea and not unnecessary wear on the engine. I wouldn't buy a car if I couldn't turn off this stupid "feature".

Yes.

And any salesman will tell you, cars pollute far more at idle.

I think it's more of a carbon emission issue.

It's a way for the car companies to say. "look we are doing everything we can to stop unnecessarily dump CO2 and other pollutants into the air"

See we are "green"

Thing is, every time the engine starts you get a raw shot of fuel into the exhaust system, and if the cats have enough time to cool, that shot of hydrocarbons pollute more than if you had just kept the engine running.

Given all the changes (present and coming) I believe the Mrs. and I are driving our last vehicles in the traditional sense. I can see these changes driving up the used prices of these more traditional vehicles.

We are living the transition to “Red Barchetta.”

My boss has an Acura TLX that has this (non) feature. I drive the thing once in a while and shut off the system. I don't like it at all. There is a delay to get moving that bothers me. I don't like to feel disconnected from the vehicle or the road.

The shut off at stops signs feature was a NON -OPTIONAL add on .. read that standard equipment along with the 14 cup holders which each have their own personal "crash-bag" .

Did I tell you we got a rock "through" the windshield of our 2018 Highlander necessitating replacement (5K miles)
After the windshield was installed (OEM) we had to return to the dealer to have the windshield "calibrated"... yes "calibrated" $336 smackers on top of the $1000 dollar windshield installation.

Progress is our most important product.

"So when the engine shuts off, you would have no AC. That would not work for me in traffic jams in the summer, or even stop and go city driving."

The car starts when the temperature raises to a certain point above the set point. I've only tested this once but it functioned as advertised.
