May I be excused? My brain is full.

My wife brought up the subject of appropriate music for a cocktail party.

I suggested Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, etc. and I have more than enough for an evening's entertainment.

She seems to be leaning toward Ray Charles, Ramsey Lewis, and Sergio Mendes. That's cool with me too, but I'm drawing a blank about who else would be appropriate with them.

What says the FDP?

Depends on the crowd, the nature of the party, etc. I like a mix and usually just play Pandora, Amazon Prime music, or an internet available jazz stations.

If these are CDs, play 'em all.

Combine your wife and your choices.
You can't go wrong with a random mix that includes Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Michael Bubble, Harry Conack Jr., Spencer Day, Dian Krall, Larry Carlton and George Benson and more....

Be bold:

•Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica" on the turntable

•Stale doughnut/vienna sausage hors d'oeuvres

•7-Up/Ripple cocktails

A party your guests will remember...

Plug in a mechanic’s drop light and sing Roy Orbison’s tune ‘In Dreams’ into it like a microphone.

See the film Blue Velvet for performance pointers and decorating ideas.

Cocktail party? Is this like a theme based event? I'm thinking Engelbert Humperdinck "Les Bicyclettes de Belsize", a little TJ What's New Pussycat and mandatory sideburns.

"Cocktail party? Is this like a theme based event?"

Possibly. She only asked me about music, but did mention the tv show Mad Men. I never saw it but am under the impression that it was set in the 60s or late 50s. Taking such a theme very far would probably be difficult, as most of my friends only wear suits to weddings and funerals. We're mostly jeans and t-shirts guys.
